Would like to OC Ram to 450MHz FSB. Which of these will do?

I am looking to buy the following set up:
E6400 C2D
GA-965P-S3
AC Freezer 7 Pro
Ram ??? 2GB

I would like to overclock the bus to 450Mhz (actually I would be happy with anything over 430MHz). Hoping to get 3.6Ghz for the 6400.

I am buying at DirectCanada.com since no one can match their prices in Canada.

I have three questions.
1) Which if the ram listed below will get me there? and
2) Will I have to relax the timings to get there?
3) Will they all boot up okay with the S3 mobo (I don't have other DDR2 ram kicking around to help the boot up)

I'm not quite sure how much of a performance hit there is when relaxing from CL4 to CL5, but I would like to stay at CL4 if possible (although I would rather not pay too much over $300 for that).

Exactly the same idea as him you have, yyeeeeeeessssss ?

Then do a search for any post containing "VDIMM" by "TabrisDarkPeace" it'll show you how to get OCZ and G.Skill working first boot (well it needs two boots and a voltage change) every time w/o worries.

(or ask Wusy for it, and tell him to check his PMs and update the overclockers FAQ with VDIMM procedure)

I saw that but I wasn't interested in the PC2 7200 and 8000 ram you listed. A bit overkill for what I'm looking for. I was interested in comments specific to the ram I listed, as that is what I have access to in the price range I am looking at.

Yeah, but PC2-6400 = DDR2-800.

If you want something that works at 450 MHz (base), thus 900 MHz (post DDR), then you'll be after DDR2-900 (ala: PC2-7200).

Anything less is not guaranteed to work.


However if you trust the tables other over-clockers have made, using very small (less than 100) samples of each pair of DIMM to over-clock to XYZ MHz at X.YZ Voltage then by all means take the risk.

Just run Prime95 Torture test heaps, and MemTest86+ overnight before anything major software wise. (Lest corrupt the registry or something).

It is like fitting tyres to a race car only rated at 200 km/hr when you know the car will be doing 225 km/hr while breaking heavily. It might work, but it isn't tested, and thus a tyre might burst just when trying to slow down to take a corner - with the expected results.

Also, DirectCanada is actually owned by NCIX, and they do price matching as well. They're basically the same company, they're right across the street from each other (their actual stores), as well as their warehouses are across the street and if you phone either of them, they have the same hold music going at the same time, and the same answering machine message and same everything. I prefer NCIX 'cause I've been shopping there for a long long time, and have a premium membership.

A lot of nice info but not what you asked for. The OCZ Titanium and Rev2 will reach 450Mhz, I wouldnt risk it with the rest. But if youve got the few CAD bucks, definitely pick the Xtreem, theyre very highly binned and will reach up to 550Mhz.

Thanks rwaritsdario. 550 MHz with the Xtreem? Let me ask you this then, is it even possible to get close to 500 MHz with the 6400, ACF7 and the S3 mobo?

BTW thanks for the tip on a different thread about the thermal paste that is already on the ACF7 (MX-1) being better than the Arctic Silver paste. Saves me scraping it off and re-applying.

Generally no... You've either need legendary air cooling or decent water, but the motherboard certainly allows it so its up your future cooling upgrades
There is also the benefit of running tight timings in case you wont use the whole bandwidth available.
