Hey folks. I'm planning on upgrading my old 1080 TI that I've had for about 5 years now and was looking at getting a RTX 4070 Ti. Was curious if there would be any potential bottleneck with my 5900X ?
I've looked around and haven't really found a clear cut answer.

No such thing as a "bottleneck".

You WILL do better with a stronger graphics card.
But, by how much is a question.
It depends on the games you play.
Some are cpu limited and some are graphics limited.
Run this simple test:
Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
This makes the graphics card loaf a bit.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

They updated gaming benchmarks with 3090. As you can see in 1080p, 5900x is capable of doing well over a hundred frames in many games quite easily. So question really is if your monitor is the limiting factor. Gotta have at least 1440p 144Hz to enjoy your cpu's power otherwise this cpu bottleneck analogy is moot if your dealing with say 60Hz.

In my mind you would have to be playing FPS games at very high frame rates at a competitive level to contemplate doing it.

Everyone is different, but there are no circumstances where I would consider upgrading a 5900X today. It still delivers an excellent gaming experience.

Play the games you want at the lowest graphics settings and see how they perform on your current setup. Go find reviews of the RTX 4070 Ti and see how they perform at the quality settings you want. Take the lower of the two numbers.

If the CPU is lower, then figure out if that's well within your performance requirements. If it is (which it'll likely be), then carry on anyway, you don't need an upgrade.

I'd be looking at 1080p 144hz due to my monitor. Maybe 1440p in the future, but I have no plans for it right now.

I actually never thought of testing like that haha. Whole reason I'm looking too upgrade is too prepare for games starting too come out since from what I've seen a 1080ti is starting too finally fall behind on recent games like starfield.

Edit: I went ahead and tested what I think is the most graphical intense game I have installed right now which is baldurs gate 3. I go from about 90 fps 1080p ultra to 150-160 when set to 1080p low and 120 fps 720p ultra to 215 fps 720p low. All still maxing GPU at 100% mind; with maybe 35-40% cpu usage at 720p low at the highest
So theoretically with what you had suggested if I were too upgrade then that 150-160 on 1080p low would probably be equal on ultra if not higher yeah? Since it seems like my CPU has a lot of room too work still

According to the specs of the RTX 4070 Ti and the Ryzen 9 5900X, there should not be any significant bottleneck between them. Both are high-end components that support PCIe 4.0 and have enough cores, clock speeds, and memory bandwidth to handle most games and applications. The RTX 4070 Ti has 7680 CUDA cores, 12 GB of GDDR6X memory, and a boost clock of up to 2610 MHz. The Ryzen 9 5900X has 12 cores, 24 threads, 64 MB of L3 cache, and a boost clock of up to 4.8 GHz.

Of course, the actual performance may vary depending on the resolution, settings, drivers, and optimization of the software you are using. Some games may be more CPU-intensive or GPU-intensive than others, and some may benefit from features like ray tracing or DLSS. You can check some benchmarks and reviews of the RTX 4070 Ti and the Ryzen 9 5900X to get a better idea of how they perform in different scenarios.

In general, however, the RTX 4070 Ti and the Ryzen 9 5900X should make a great pair for gaming and creating. They are both among the best products in their respective categories and should offer excellent performance for years to come. I hope this helps you with your decision.

I've kind of come to the conclusion that I'm overall really overthinking things.
From the replies here and more research that I did I've come to the conclusion that I'll defiantly be looking at a hell of an performance increase plus having all the new bells and whistles such as DLSS and RT that I'll have access to.
