Would the Intel Core i7-3840QM be a possible upgrade for the Dell L502X with the i7-2630QM?

Solution
It's USUALLY pretty civil here. The mods do a pretty good job of keeping order. The AMD vs Intel threads are the ones that cause the most trouble.

What video card do you have? 520m? 540m? 555m? I honestly don't believe upgrading cpus is going to make them perform any better.

I'm not trying to talk you out of upgrading. I just don't want you to be disappointed if it's not the drastic upgrade you were expecting. I've upgraded many cpus over the years and at least half the time the user was disappointed. It takes a very drastic change to really be noticeable.

A system with an i3 + ssd will be faster more times than not over a system with an i7 + 7200rpm hdd.
Yes it is feasible, but it wouldn't be easy. They are the same socket and wattage so it should work.

I'm using a L702X with a 2760qm and I've considered the same thing. I honestly don't think the difference would be as great as you think though.

An ssd would be a huge upgrade. It's the biggest upgrade you can make. Doubling the RAM would be huge if you're going from 2Gb to 4GB, it would be noticeable if you're going from 4GB to 8GB, but it would hardly ever be noticeable if you're upgrading from 8GB to 16GB.

Unless you are just doing some seriously intense computing, rendering, editing, or a silly amount of multitasking, you will not notice the difference between two i7s.

How about with gaming? I have not gamed seriously in years but I like to get on Skyrim from time to time still. Also yeah I usually have many things working at the same time so I think it should help. Thanks for the info by the way this has already been more civil than any other forum I have ever used.
