System and background below.

Short version, Im bored and want to upgrade something and have my eyes on my cpu. Byt with my usage profile of this rig, I doubt if I actually would gain anything by replacing my current cpu with a 9xxx.

Gain as seeing any performance gains noticeable beyond benchmarks.

Your thoughts gentlemen?

Use:
Play games on a daily basis. Mixed titles, but only newest ones and mostly shooters (more or less SP only) and I prefer max settings for optimal eyecandy.
Uses the rig a lot for officework also, but nothing fancier than PP, Excel, Word etc.

Rig:

Monitor is currently a AOC AGON AG322QCX (31.5" / 2560x1440 QHD). But, and this reflects my on my question in the subject, will switch to a 4K when the pricing has come down a bit on 32"+ 4K gaming monitors.

ASUS B360 plus gaming
I7 - 8700 (aka the target)
Asetek AIO plus 3 case fans. Static pressure.
ASUS ROG STRIX Geforce 2070 8GB
32GB Trident Z RGB 2666 ram
1 TB Samsung 860 SSD
1 TB Crucial M.2 SSD
2 TB HDD
NZXT H500 case

Solution
I wouldn't bother upgrading the CPU as it would be more of a sidegrade then upgrade. As for the monitor pricing has come down a little bit but your 2070 won't give you max settings so you would need to consider a 2080 or 2080 ti for 4K.

If you have a decent amount of cash burning a hole in your pocket then maybe consider getting a VR setup?

Thought about VR pleanty of times. Never tried it, believe it or not. Does it deliver on the promises? (assuming using a good setup).

It's really fun, before I had to sell my previous system (4770K16gb/1080 ti & Oculus) I had a blast with it. Skyrim VR with graphics mods (vanilla looks terrible) is absolutely amazing as you can hold your shield in one hand and then sword/axe in the other and attack. And while your aware your in a game nothing made my heart race more then walking down a path and having a dragon come down out of the sky raining fire. The fights were intense. My other favorite game was From Other Suns which can be played solo but was so much better in coop (3 player), met like 90% of my Oculus friends list from that game and no region lock so everyone was from different countries around the world.

I'm trying to get back into it myself, waiting for the Vive Cosmos to release.
