Would two 980 ti's be overkill

Not at all! but it really depends on what are you going to use them. like for example, if you gonna be playing at 1080p, 2 GTX 980ti is an overkill, waste of money, because you wont be using all the potential 2 GTX 980ti could offer.

there is really no future-proof, because you may have the crazy hardware now, but in 5 months a game is release that make your card shake! I went from Crossfire to a single GTX 980. So, its basically living the present lol not future proof.

haha not really 5 months, but its like a saying. A Year or two you will see that your hardware is not handling upcoming titles like now.

Yeah my CPU is a step down from the x99 set ups.

Ummm, two gtx 980tis could last your rig 4-5 years at least if you were playing at 1440p. Probably 2-3 years at 4k. Sure games get increasingly demanding, but not to the point at which you need to buy another $1300 in gpus every couple years.

No. Without more of an idea of what you want out of your gpu we can't say what's overkill.

Do you want to play all games at ultra settings or are you happy to reduce settings?
What Hz monitor will you be using?
What resolution will you be gaming at?

For example 1440p at 60fps and high to ultra settings you only need 1 980Ti, however 4k at 60fps and high to ultra settings will require 2 but if you played at 4k 40fps and medium settings you could get away with 1.

Also buying 2 cards now for £1200 and using them for 4 years may not be as good an option as buying 1 £600 card now, using for 2 years and then spending another £600 and using that card for a further 2 years, you can also sell your first card

This. This guy is right, an upvote to you sir.

Well if you get two be prepared to turn on v-sync, because otherwise you're gonna get some serious screen tearing. Even at this resolution two gtx 980tis are going to exceed 60fps maxed out in any game, so if you don't cap the framerate at that of the screen's refresh rate, you're gonna get screen tearing, which is seriously annoying. You can still turn off vsync in shooters, but anything else I'd turn it on in. Beautiful choice of screen by the way, that thing looks gorgeous.

aww man, I hate v-sync, it always feels that whenever I have it on, the damn setting is like holding back the power of the GPU. Thanks man, that moniter has been on my wish list for a month, love at first site, you know.

Ummmm, having vsync on isn't holding back the power of your gpu, your monitor already does that if you go beyond the refresh rate. Vsync just allows the monitor to sync with the gpu better so that the gpu doesn't produce frames faster than the monitor can display. So believe me vsync is a good thing for an OP build.
