Would upgrading from an extremely cheap motherboard increase audio quality?

I recently bought the Audio Technica MSR7s. While they aren't exactly the best headphones in the world, they're definitely not bad. For some reason, they don't sound as clear as I was expecting(they only sound slightly clearer than my previous $30 gaming headset -bleh-). I was wondering if this was do to me cheaping out on my motherboard(Asus H110M-E/M.2). If so, would buying a sound card improve the audio quality by a noticeable amount?

Realtek ALC887 isn't bad, it's like an 8-channel version of the 10-channel ALC892. 97dB SNR and decent specs. The only issues were some clicks and pops from older drivers. If there is a SPDIF header on your board you could try sending digital directly to a receiver to do the digital-to-analog conversion instead.

How does it sound with other music sources like a CD player?
