We're back for another round of "Would you do it?" lol. I hope this is the last one.

Would you upgrade from:

Would you swap from:

GPU: AMD 390x
CPU: i7 4790k (Not OC'd)
RAM: 16GB DDR3
HDD: 500gb
SSD: 120gb
PSU: 650w RM Corsair
Win: 10

to:

CPU: I5 6600k
GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 FTW
Motherboard: EVGA Z170 FTW
HDD: 3tb Western digital hard drive
SSD: 128gb Samsung 850 Evo SSD
RAM: 16GB G.skill trident z 2400
Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61 water cooler
Power supply: EVGA 500w
Win: 10

THIS TIME for a price point of let's say $400. I would be selling the top one for $600 to make up for the $1,000 the guy is asking for the second one.

I buy bottom PC for $1,000 I sell top PC for $600 = I pay $400 to upgrade from top to bottom. Is it worth?

Solution

If his monitor resolution is 1920x1080 the i7 + GTX 1070 would be great, if he's got 2560x1440 or higher the i5 + GTX 1080 would be better.

But if he has an i7-4790K + Z97 he should stick with that.

I would not do it. The 4790K is a better CPU than the 6600K.

If you want to spend $400 just buy a new GPU. But honestly you shouldn't have much issue playing any games with your current setup.

Do you not have a Z series mobo?
What is your screen resolution/refresh rate?

*I'm just seeing your other posts. If you already have a buyer lined up you could consider a new build. But your current CPU can handle a GTX 1080. You could sell your current GPU and buy a GTX 1080 and be better off with a 4790K than 6600K.

But if you have 60Hz 1080p monitor you should just keep what you have, unless you just want something new just for the sake of building.

Volk - I play at 144hz and 1080 mostly, yeah. It's more so just because I'd like to upgrade the parts that I can..but I'm finding there's literally nothing worth upgrading from a 4790k too from what every one keeps telling me. So I'm leaning a lot more towards selling the r9 390x for HOPEFULLY like $200-$250? (is that reasonable?) and spending the $400 toward a 1080 or 1080ti..idk. I guess DDR4 vs DDR3 isn't really important?

I appreciate all your help. I may just tell my buddy to buy this PC with the 1080..he was considering a GTX 1070 and i7 7700 for 1100..is this better for $100 less? Or does the 7700 make up for the difference in the 1070 vs 1080 battle?

DDR3 is still good and so is teh 4790K. What motherboard do you have?

144Hz yea GPU upgrade is the way to go. GTX 1070 Ti or GTX 1080, whichever you can get for the better deal with price and quality.

Looking at eBay the cheapest right now for sale is $279 Buy It Now for 390X. Maybe try around that price.
