Hello all,

This computer is for my wife to play WoW, browse the web, check a lil email and maybe use office suite.. (lol)

Anywho I know this build is probably overboard and I would gladly take any suggestions on how to drop it down in price..

I think you're overestimating how demanding WoW is. The computer you spec'd has plenty of muscle to run it. I didn't see any one component that made me think "Holy crap he's wasting his money on that"

Will a cheap dell be able to run it without any issues?

Any suggestions how to make this build cheaper yet be able to run WoW at 100% graphics settings and no lag?

I appreciate your assitance.

Thanks,
Lammy

that system should pump about 100+ FPS constant into WOW on high settings..., dont think it'll fall below 60 FPS...

Ps. come on dude, you know that machine is for you and you want a pink case! :p Just Kidding, that thing will be pretty nice for most games out there, and will be able to handle any game... What's this all gonna cost by the way???

no need to drop the price on that system, it's a decent system that'll last a few years...

The price is ~$839 from newegg.. And dang you figured it out. I just think pink cases are soooo cute. :p

Yea I know it is going to be way over kill for WoW thats why I am really debating on dropping back the specs..

id watch out on those 8600gts. I believe that there is no fan control on it so its really loud. My brother has and MSI one and it works great other than the noise. Maybe its just his. just my two sense

This kinda goes against the purpose of the thread, but with the setup you have in the first post, I would get at least a 500W power supply.

If you just want to run WoW, going with AMD might be a cheaper option or as someone else has already stated, look at some cheap desktops from HP or Dell. They usually come with 19" widescreen LCDs as well and you don't have to worry about an OS.

EDIT: aahh judgment beat me to the AMD thing...

As stated you can swap CPU for an E2x00 and grab a 3870/3850 or a 9600GT, will provide plenty of power for WoW.

AMD build is also a good option for this kind of scenario in terms of saving money.

The 8600GTS will handle WoW quite easily, but they are underpowered overall, so I would be more inclined to get one of the cards I listed above for a budget machine.

And you can probably score a relatively cheep Dell machine that would handle it, youll just want to make sure it has a discrete graphics card if you want all settings maxxed.

I totally agree with everyone that has posted so far about overkill, but I'll share my experience recently being a fellow WoW player.

WoW is one of those games where 1. Its engine is not designed to make use of the latest and greatest, so there will be a diminishing amount of returns (the more you upgrade) and 2. I've noticed that what is "acceptable" for WoW players is largely on the eye of the beholder.

I just built an E8500@4.2, running an HD4850 Crossfire (WoW does not make use of it), and with all settings maxed to the highest possible, 1920x1200, 24bit 8x multisample, everything maxed there are still areas that can bring me down to the 60's or even 50's (like Shattrath City or during massive pvp).

It is all relative to how exactly smooth you want things to be, and how much you are willing to spend. Someone might buy a dell, tone down the settings a bit and be just fine. Some people play Arena all day long and need every frame possible so they don't miss a beat during PVP. All I can say is, a 399 Dell would play WoW perfectly for some, and to others it will look like utter crap.

But yeah on the "average," what the above posters have suggested is on target definitely. Also keep in mind, Wrath of the Lich King is supposed to bring with it some improvements to the engine, so having a slightly beefier spec now might be a good investment too along with other games you might want to play later.

Judgement thank you for posting your build recommendation. I will have to look into that aticard. Right now with my build I am looking at $759.91.

Yea the whole dell thing is killing me. I can build a decent pc through them for $560ish with a 19" lcd. But the vid card is an ati2600 256..

I'd get a different power supply; that Thermaltake has only 18A on the +12V rail.

I have that same power supply in my machine, but it's not exactly a power hog (I was running it with a 300W PSU for a while...).
