Need to replace aging error prone POS, i plan to use it mostly for gaming and music(not hardcore).

I am using prices from http://ncix.com/ , i will likely purchase from them.

AMD Opteron 165 Dual Core Processor S939 $394
EVGA E-GEFORCE 7800GT PCI-E 256MB $414
OCZ Platinum EB PC4000 2GB 2X1GB DDR500 $389
DFI LANParty UT NF4 ULTRA-D Motherboard ATX S939 $136
LG GSA-4167B 16X DVD+-RW 16X Dual Layer $57
Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250GB SATA W/ NCQ 7200RPM 8MB $136
Antec Sonata II Black ATX w/SmartPower 2.0 450W $130

I appreciate any input on my current build, i hope to buy in the next week or so. I do not mind lowering the price, the ram, mobo,Harddrive are what im most unsure of.

thanks, Marco

You might also save a few bucks by skipping the dual core buisiness and going faster single core for less. I am still completely unconvinced that anyone needs a dual core on the desktop right now and there are still very few apps that can even really use them. I would recommend the A64 3700+ as a good bang/buck CPU.

hehe, I have WoW also, casual play, and EQ2. Both graphic intense games, but I think EQ2's graphics are insane compared to WoW. But on the flip side, everyone in EQ2 looks the same (at high end), and WoW has a great armor graphic designs differentials (class armor suits are hella sweet). Anyways not to sidetrack from the thread, nice build you got going 8)

It's good you chose 2gb, BF2 is a memory hog like crazy

Agreed, need the 2gb in mmorpgs too :D

Well after seeing the performance difference in my 2 machines, 1 with 1gig and my new one with 2gigs, I'll never put in anything less then 2gigs in any build from now on.

You can definitly skip the dual core and save some cash.

The thing about dual core chips is 99% of applications out there won't use the second core. Why? Because a program must be compiled for dual CPU support in order to use them. What applications support 2+ CPUs? Windows XP Pro (just the OS), Oracle Database, 3D Studio Max, Maya, other expensive software that you and I will probably never use :)

The RAM, I've never seen World of Warcraft use more than 524MB, so 1GB of RAM is really going to be enough. The only program I have ever seen use more than around 500MB is FireFox .. really, my box was responding really slowly, I opened TaskManager, and found FireFox using 1,044,252k; it was probably some memory leak from the dozens of extensions I have.

The Video, well, WoW doesn't have great graphics, I'm running the game at 1600x1200 with the graphic settings totally maxed out. I have dual PCI-E 6600, using SLi.

The LanParty board, EXCELLENT selection, I have two of these boards and have built two other PCs with them, they are wonderful!

Good luck!

if you want those then its cool. when you get into speakers that is the biggest deabate of all time. so i would pick what you like in this case not just what others recommend. I would invest in a ood set of headphones though.

Actually Youd Be Suprized At How Many.. Apps Have Updates, New Versions, That Are Now Multi-Processor/Dual Core (And 64-Bit) Enabled. And Even The Ones That Arent Still Have An Advantage Over Running On A Single-Core.

Trust Me (Hint: My Systems Specs Are Below, Take Note Of The CPU) And I Use A Large Variety Of Software, And Games, And When I Swithced Up From A Single-Core Of The Same Stock Speed (3200+ 2.0GHz) And My Hl2 Benchmark Scores Went From 107FPS To 130FPS. And Besides.... Why Not Be Ready For The Future?... You Know How Fast Things Change In The Hardware Arena
