I checked the WoW forums yesterday and there were two threads
complaining about the login queues (one mentioned an hours wait)
and a post by a Blizzard rep outlawing in-game "gambling" with
the roll command.

Did they at least replace their bittorrent updater with something
sane? I want to resub just to play when I get bored of other
things but good god are they ever going to make an effort to
actually LET people play in peace?

You'd think they'd have bigger fish to fry than that. From what I heard the
Euro launch was almost as bad as the US launch.

Weren't you one of the ones screaming loudest Blizzard had the worst
network in gaming history? Why would you want to subscribe to a game like
that again?

Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full
house and four people died

Not sure ifd you are refering to subscribing or playing. But I've had
the game since week 1 and I never wait to log on and play. In fact from
the time I double clikc the WOW icon until I am in game is usually about
a minute or two tops.

I don't know, I rejoined after a short break, and have had perfect login
with no in-game lag or drops. This is in the last week of playing. Maybe
they have their act together finally. I have no more complaints...yet.

What about their patches? Do you get updates through their
bittorrent update tool?

Yes.

The reason I choose WOW over EQ2 (which I highly enjoyed as well) is I
have two kids under the age of 2, so my time is limited. I can play in
short stints of WOW and enjoy myself.

I'm at the point however where soloing is not as much fun, I can't do
any dungeons since they are all instanced and finding a group is not
always a good time.

I can't believe they are still using that method. During the beta
everyone speculated that it was just because patches were so
big... and that retail would offer a normal patch procedure. I
feel for those behind university firewalls and such.

I just bought the game and signed up this weekend. I have had 0 problems
with the game at all, including logging in. No queues, waiting or anything.

The updater is still BT, and it took about 15-20 mins for the initial update
for me on Sat.

BTW, it's my first time playing any sort of game on the internet, so it's
quite an experience for me. I'm having a ton of fun.

The login queues are improved on Blackrock (which was always one of the
worst servers). I haven't gotten a queue other than on a weekend
afternoon/evening for quite some weeks now, and even then it's only
200-300, rather than the 1000+ that was the norm earlier in the year.

Don't think so, but given that they haven't done any real patches since
probably well before you quit it's kind of hard to be sure. 🙂

(of course, I'm one of the people who loves the Bittorrent patcher)

Cheers!

I've been playing since day one too and I've seen the queue come up
about 2-3 times and didn't wait more than 5-10 minutes. I know others
have had much worse luck but it must be some servers are more
popular. I'm on a PvE server.

There is a check box on the update window to disable the sharing if
you don't want it. I think it's always been there actually. I really
don't know why people get upset about this. It's only shared while the
patch is coming down, not forever....

Can you imagine how slow Blizzard would be to patch if they did that?
They're bad enough now without dribbling patches out over time. 🙂

Cheers!

Horizons made you sit and wait for the patch to download from their
servers at a glacial pace. But then again, any time someone says "every
MMO I have ever played.. <does something good>", you can probably chime
in with Horizons as a counter-example. 🙂

Yeah, Horizons was horrible. Search around for the history behind
its creators. The entire thing was doomed from the start.

Two reasons:

* Some ISPs and universities block BT.
* Their client isn't the real BT client it's some propietary
clone that doesn't work as well.

More than likely it's a recurring problem with a workaround that
some guy is running constantly. They don't have a fix yet,
obviously. Usually you have a maintanence window. This is a
period of time where you're given an hour or two to do all your
upgrades and fixes. This time is usually picked as the least busy
time so as to impact the least amount of customers.

Don't be surprised if you're Internet connection isn't
functioning great at 4:30 AM on a Monday.

Good thing for Bell that I'm asleep at 4:30 am. Unfortunately, Blizzard
thinks I'm snoozing by 7:00pm.

I think Guild Wars got that right: patches download in the background
while you're playing, and they can even upgrade the server without
forcing you to quit the game... they just run two servers and you
switch to the new server next time you zone. The only time you have to
restart is when they release a new client program.

The problem with it is that it doesn't let you set an upload limit,
which can cause problems for some connections - if your upstream is
maxed out, it chokes acknowledgements of downloaded packets and slows
down your download.

When doing a big Blizzard patch I used a third-party product
(NetLimiter) to limit the uploading to a few k/sec less than my
connection can handle. But with a "real" BitTorrent client I wouldn't
have had to.

Cheers!

I had the same problem during the beta test. The uploader part of
the client was just choking my connection to death. I also used that
program, and I remember Blizzard posting asking people not to
do that. I think they were too worked up about people who didn't
want to share *at all*.

Incorrect. The standard downloader uses Bit Torrent but you can also
download the patches from FilePlanet.

A lot of people will probably strongly dislike that option, but it is
there.
