WOW - Thumbs Up

I finally had some time to give WOW a try, and...I like it. I like it a
lot. Despite the wierd glitch where the servers did'nt recognize me,
when I'd signed up the week before Xmas, wierd. Oh well, half hour on
hold, and I'm back in action.

Before I start, I need to say, the burnout cycle with D2 with me is
getting shorter and shorter, and I have no interest right now in
playing. That will change, it always does. I'm not going to compare D2
to WOW - they're two entirely different experiences.

Besides, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is also distracting me in a big
way, as well, even if I was'nt going through D2 Burnout.

Wow is...wow. What a game. I'd read here and other places complaints of
slow leveling, but in 6 hours I got my Rogue to level 10, no sweat - and
that's with lots of dying, exploring, a dinner break, etc...

I'm runnning it on a dual 2 gig G5 with a 23" Cinema, and the graphics
are awesome - and that's without most of the special effects from a card
that supports the shaders WOW uses. Very smooth gameplay, the controls
take a bit getting used to, but once you do, it's very easy. There is a
D2-like click to move setting, but for this game, it's not very workable.

Likes:

The sheer scope of the game, the maps are HUGE, and I've only explored
one area fairly well.

Creating characters is fun. I've tried several just to see the graphics.

Loot is fairly eady to get - leveling to use higher-grade gear isn't.
You have to EARN your gear in this game.

The game is non-linear - you decide what quests to do, and in what
order, to some extent. SOme quests open up after you complete others,
but there's so many available at one time, it's easy to forget which
ones you have. Some involve higher-level monsters, but if you wanna try,
you can. If one is too hard, you go somewhere else, and come back. I'm
finishing up the main quests in Elwynn...I think. There's a LOT of
quests, and I see they can add news ones regularly. No more grind of the
same maps, the same quests, the same monsters of D2 - this is more like
it!

The graphics accurately reflect your gear - if I get new gloves - they
show up. And there's a lot - and I mean a LOT - of variety.

I love the pets showing up in towns...I gotta get one, but the only one
I've found is the stupid Crazy Cat Lady. Pfffft. I want a frigging bear!

The interface is perfect. No, with Cosmos it's perfect. Really. It's so
easy to run the game. You're doing as much as D2, but it's easier.

POUCHES!!!!! ie. EXPANDABLE STASHES. You can expand your inventory by
getting bags, pouches, and I saw a satchel I couldnt afford. A monster
dropped a six slot blag for me, and I bought another - lots of room!

Dislike:

No skill points to distribute until later on in the game. It's
frustrating to get awarded skills you know you just won't use. Sure, the
"Stealth" skill is cool, but I doubt I'll use it- that point could have
gone to much better use elsewhere.

They really dump you in the game with little tutorial - while I like
that, there's so much to do and see and learn, it's a little frustrating.

Hate:

The whole death thing. Okay, cool effects, but damn it, it's a pain in
the ass when you get killed by bears in a remote part of the map, and
every time you die, you have to run back! It's a waste of time. Sure I
could take the penalty of the...no, no way. I earn every point, I'll run
- but I'm going to bitch about it!

I'm just getting going, but I think I'm going to enjoy this game. :)
It's a lot better than I thought it would be - this game is DEEP in the
level of detail, the sheer number of things you can do, like learn
skills, lear professions, build stuff, kill stuff, explore, train - or
just wander and see a beautiflly designed game.

Heh, SvH's slow-leveling complaint is the only one I've heard. It's
leveled off a bit now, but for a time the #1 complaint with the game seemed
to be that leveling was way too *fast*. 🙂

That'll change--if you have the Blacksmithing trade, wait until you run into
a quest that wants you to make 12 each of "x" and take it to support the
front line. Heh, there's NEVER enough room. 🙂

I've only played three MMORPGs and of them, WoW's "death penalty" is by far
the least aggravating.

Sorry, but, for all the cockamamie hype, it sux! Excessive waits, piss poor
engineering, and very short on fulfilled promises.
1. Pay $50 for a game
2. Continue to pay to play the game you just paid $50 for
3. wait FOREVER in queue to just play
4. better monitoring by blizz? no hacks? no cheats? no ebay? MY ASS. THEY
LIED AGAIN, JUST TO GET YOUR MONEY!

I am sorry, but, if you are foolish enough to jump into this game then you
are perpetuating the very thing a lot of people are raising hell about
gaming companies about. You shouldn't try to push something people don't
care about and are not interested in.

It seems like blizz failed so miserably that they've stooped to tactics
like hyping their own game in places where it doesn't even pertain. Very,
very sad. just proves further how bad it is really going for that failure I
call "whoops" and you call "WoW". take it elsewhere. I don't care about the
lame excuse for a game. Take it to the appropriate forum where it can be
properly flamed.

And if you really want to know how screwed up it is, go read the WoW forums
on Bnet. 'Nuf said.

Since you obviously don't have enough sense to create a character on a less
crowded server than whatever one you're using, there's no point considering
the rest of your rant.

If you need to email, then chainbreaker (naturally) at comcast dot
net--that's "net" not "com"--should do it.

Which suggests the servers aren't well balanced, and/or not dynamically
so, but that's clearly Oliasys' fault, not Blizzards.

What the hell are you talking about, what's this "waiting in queu"? I've
never waited a microsecond to get on a server, even at peak times. I've
seen no hacks, no cheating, I could care about Ebay, and I see lots of
Blizzard staff monitoring the game.

I also see a LOT of people having a lot of fun, I watched an Undead come
visit a low-level town to have some fun with the humans last night, and
everyone run around trying to catch him, it was funnier than hell. The
_interaction_ with other players is WAY beyond what D2 can give you, and
is in line with all the other MMOGs out there. The level of cooperation
in WOW is awesome, even though I've yet to join a Guild, I ALWAYS find
people to go out adventuring with. There's no arguing about loot,
there's no pickit or maphack, there's no bitching about using that aura
over mine, there's no "Noob!" bs, there's just a lot of people having
fun.

This game is a blast. If you don't like it, fine, but stop trying to
piss in everyone's cornflakes. To me, the couple of hours online I play
are WELL worth the money I pay - I drop at least 4 times the WOW fees
each month on DVDs.

Well, yes it is, if he insists on continuing to try to log into a server
that's clearly in the red zone, population wise. The only reason I can
think of why anybody wouldn't want to do that would be if they were a
munchkin or something, and I have no sympathy whatever for that.

It'd be very easy to create characters of the opposing faction to your main
on a light load server and play those if your main got dicey. There's been
very little time since I've had the game I've not been able to "just play"
as the OP puts it, and if I've been able to, so could he, at least
somewhere.

Mt Dew and Chocolate!

(wait: those aren't addictions/indulgences, they're basic food groups.)
