[WoW] Two Paladin weapon questions

I'm a (I think) 18 Paladin, and just paid the 10s to train on axes
because I got tired of finding axes I couldn't use. I know I'm
ineligible for projectile weaposn, but what other weapon style(s)
should I consider learning with my 1g70s? Or are all styles more or
less equal, in that their most powerful weapons are comparable?

Having learned axes, I can now wield a 18.2 DPS two-handed
axe. Otherwise, I'd be wielding a 10 DPS mace plus a 162 armor
shield. At what level of newly-acquired one-handed weapon would the
tradeoff be worth it to return to using it and a shield? 14-16 DPS,
perhaps? (And why are two-handed weapons so handicapped? The only
reason I'm using the two-handed axe is because its DPS is so high
compared to my other weapon.)

Eep...a shield with only 162 armor at level 18? My 17 warrior is using a
shield, I believe it's called War Painted Shield or something like
that...looks like a turtle shell...which has 411 armor on it. Well, he's
using it when I can play him...the server he's on is one of the realms
that's been down since sometime yesterday.

That's the best I've found. (I had bought a 162 armor shield
earlier--the only armor or weapon I've purchased--but found an
equivalent one in a drop.)

Perhaps I need to be doing more Elite-level quests? I've done all the
Westfall quests except Van Cleef, which we had to abort because the
tank in my group had to leave. Currently I'm making my way through the
Redridge and, more slowly, Duskwood quests; maybe I should try Van
Cleef again instead?

You're a bit low to do VC. However, since you're in the Westfall area, keep
going down south until you hit the lighthouse (watch out for the Murlocs).
There's a ghost there, from whom you can get several quests. Some can be
done at your level if you're careful. Ol' Murk-Eye, however, will require a
group. You get a shield that will be around 400 AC and 7 block. Looks like
a ship's wheel.

As far as weapons, if your 2H weapon is doing over 120% of the DPS of your
1H, then it's "better" to use that. Now, in groups, "Sword & Board" will
generally be a better choice if you're the MT (unless you get someone to
help you with your Vegitarian's Fist early on, then the sheer DPS
kick-assedness makes it the best choice) because of the damage mitigation.

*hopes I didn't mess anything up, I'm sure I'll hear about it if I did.*

Just caught this when I read it a second time...the tank in your group had
to leave, so you aborted teh quest? Are pallies in WoW unable to tank? Or
were you the sole healer for the group?

I believe the one I found dropped (I actually found it with my level 19
night elf hunter...well, he was 18 at the time) from some furbolgs (I don't
think I spelled that right) in Darkshore. It definitely wasn't an elite
quest, just a random drop from a level 17-19 regular mob. Same area that the
warrior's War Torn ... of the Bear chest and leg pieces came from. Hmm,
might wanna visit Darkshore with your pally. *grin* I just now realized
that's where a lot of the good drops I've found have come from.

Or more likely it was because they lost a valueable 5th member (in
Deadmines, a good tank may be the most valueable of all). Pallies can tank,
but it's not the same as a good warrior tank, and all their heals often end
up having to go to themselves rather than party members. If they were close
to the lower limits of feasability for DM, losing that tank without a ready
replacement probably made the instance into a suicide run.

Maybe it's just the server I'm on (Argent Dawn), but except for a few
particular times I've fully partied up, I (and any other pallies in the
group) have always seemed to have to play a dual role of tank and healer.
The most commong config I end up thrown into is me (pally) and a bunch of
rogues and hunters (seems to be the most common by far, though pallies are
fairly common). Priests are a rare luxury, as are druids. Warriors aren't
uncommon, but somehow the parties I'm in are usually missing one. That
means that most of the time I'm tank AND healer - which is why I usually get
soulstoned (warlocks are a dime a dozen on AD... hehe). It also means I
have a hard time maintaining any mana (I'm a Retribution pally, so healing
is not so a easy task for me).

Addendum: I just looked up my shield, and it looks like it came from a
grizzled thistle bear in Darkshore, not off the furbolgs. Link for it in

Ok, your response and Adam's makes sense. As yet, I've not gone through
Deadmines (I've been to what I presume to be the opening, planned to try
going through on my own, but have yet to find a way to get up that half-wall
blocking my way), so I didn't know what might be in there as yet. :)

Thanks, I was indeed wondering why a pally wouldn't be able to tank it. Now
I know :)

Please tell me you've at least deflected five of those points into Holy
towards lowering the interruption on your Holy Light spell... I don't care
which tree you go down, those should always be your first five talent
points. Healing is our bread and butter, and if we can't get those heals
off, we're dead.

Learn whatever skill is necessary for the best weapon you can lay your
hands on. For a paladin there's no real difference between axes,
swords, and maces. You'll probably wind up training all three types
at some point in your character's life.

Regarding handedness, carry both a good 1-h/shield and a good 2-h and
use them for different situations as necessary.

1-h/shield for:

Soloing higher-level monsters, especially melee types where the shield
will absorb a lot more damage.

Tanking in groups, especially in instances. In a group, you're not a
damage-dealer; your job is to take punishment and hold the bad guys'
attention while other party members kill them. (Seal of fury is
excellent for this).

2-h for:

Soloing easier monsters where endurance is not really a concern and
you want to kill faster.

Soloing spellcaster-type monsters, since a shield doesn't block magic.

Almost all solo situations after you get Verigan's Fist and before you
reach level 30. That weapon is sick.

These are rough guidelines, and your specific weapon choice will
depend on your talent spec, what weapons you actually have available,
and your personal preference.

Paladins can tank just fine. But being the main tank in deadmines at
level 18 isn't going to work.

Actually there were only three of us; a 55 Warrior (I think), me--the
(then) 16 Paladin--and a 20-21 Priest (someone who could resurrect and
wasn't a Paladin). I told them I'd likely hold them back, but they
didn't care. And in fact the 55 Warrior acted quite well as the threat
magnet (I did get killed once, but then this was my first instance and
first Elite quest) until he had to leave to go to sleep, but then we
only got about 20-30 minutes into the quest.

Yes; once the Warrior left we quickly teleported ourselves to our
respective Inns (in my case, after a futile fight against two 18-19
miners).

On Llane I've similarly played the tank/healer role a few times
alongside rogues and mages. And you're right; it's tough.

Absolutely. I'm a casual enough player I've not bothered with any
online tutorials on "optimizing" my Paladin, but getting the odds an
attack will not interrupt Holy Light to as low as possible seems like
a no-brainer.

Whew. Some people just hit the branch they like the sound of best, instead
of reading down the list. I'm going with a pretty-much holy build, but
after I get Holy Shock, we'll see.

Of course, did you think I was insane? hehehe

I'm a "Retribution" pally, but I got at least 5+ points in each discipline.
Later I'll experiment more, but for now I play for damage more than anything
else.

Might be a good idea :) Instance drops are at least more frequent, and
the drops off named mobs are often very good (for their level :)

Your other option is to spend an hour killing humanoids and use the cash
to buy a nice shield off the AH.

If you're really lucky, you'll find a level 60 helping a lowbie
guildmate through the Deadmines... ask them if they'll let you tag along :)

What I mean is that if I have a one-handed 20dps weapon and a
two-handed 20dps weapon, there's no reason to use the two-handed
weapon because the one-handed weapon will inflict equal damage *and*
let me use a shield. If the two-handed weapon actually inflicted
2x20dps-(some handicap for the second hand), that'd be different.

Under those circumstances, the 1H is a lot better. But you are not
comparing equivalent weaponry. A same-level 2H to a 20 DPS 1H is going to
be at 35 DPS or so.

Green items like that can basically drop from any monster of the
appropriate level - the fact that there are no furbolgs on Allakhazam's
list just means that nobody using whatever info-gathering mod they use
happened to have one drop from a furbolg. So your memory of events is
probably correct.

Cheers!

Actually, I looked more closely a few hours later and realized the furbolgs
are on there as the blackwood warrior. I just couldn't remember, when I
looked the first time, what those particular ones were called. :)

Useful fact: Despite what you might expect, Spritual Focus stacks
directly with Concentration Aura for a 105% chance to avoid
interruption. Obviously the extra 5% doesn't get you anything, but if
you have 5/5 in Spiritual Focus, you can guarantee non-interruption by
switching to Concentration Aura when you need to heal.

You know, I've never actually used concentration aura. Sounds like a good
thing to do when I'm getting beat on by multiple ass-hats.
