Wrong characters being displayed

I have a Toshiba laptop running windows 7
The keyboard all of a sudden is not working well. when i press a character it brings something else. some keys are working well but others are displaying wrong characters liker 'r' and 'f' displays '[f' 'y' displays 'hy' etc. please help me out

Do you have a function button locked down or the "alt" key ?
Test an external keyboard.
