I have a nice cooler but it is for a different socket than the LGA1151 that I currently have. (Thanks for the incorrect listing, eBay)

I know that it is slightly too small for the four corner screws to align perfectly with my mainboard, but would a "redneck" style approach work, ie. securing it with cable ties? It plugs into my mainboard so it is powered but cant be actually secured properly.

Coolers many times have back-plates to avoid stressing the MB. What you're trying to do will put stress on the MB that it isn't designed to take, and will likely just end up damaging something rather than actually working. The cooler needs to be fairly tight, and doing that with tie straps is asking for trouble. I'd get a properly fitted cooler.

Even if I'm only loading the OS and booting into windows?

I have the software on a memory stick which can monitor core temps and will shut down before the CPU gets too hot.

I'm well miffed because the seller doesn't do returns! Any recommendations on a cheapish substitute for the time being?
