Wrote Image to external hard drive

So I was trying to set up a newly acquired raspberry pi.. I was using Win32DiskImager to write the raspberry pi image (http://blog.petrockblock.com/retropie/retropie-downloads/) to an SD card.. but accidentally picked my external hard drive which was full of media that I would like back..

It took ~5 seconds for the image to write to my external and now.. I don't know how to get all of my stuff back. Is there anything I can do, or is all lost?

Thanks, I will try those. I had seen a lot of that around, but I didn't know if partition recovery software was helpful with writing an image (mostly since I don't really understand what 'writing an image' does). I will try that tonight.
