I am having severe problems on an old Dell running W98SE. After boot up into
windows - - I get an error msg for any application that I try to start. The
error message reads as follows:

WSCGetProviderPath failed, returning WSAEProviderFailedInit

I have found nothing to help me resolve this issue. Any ideas??? s/Rick

I suggest you first try LSPFix:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/lspfix.html
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Here is a reply by MVP Jeff Richards, to the same problem from a user a year ago:
"A program is trying to find out how to perform a particular network
operation, and the routine it is using for the operation has failed to load
or initialize. You could try removing and reinstalling each of your network
protocols. You should also check exactly which program is trying to do this,
as worms or viruses sometimes try to use network functions to propagate or
to phone home."

tried both lspfix and removed/reinstalled all netwrok drivers. Still get the
same error msg. Went to McAfee and they ran me through a virus scan from the
DOS environment -- - still no joy. Any other ideas???? s/Rick

Did you uninstall and reinstall all the network protocols currently installed in the
Network control panel?
Did you uninstall and reinstall Dial-Up Networking, from Add\Remove Programs>
Windows Setup tab?
