Found this at mouser.com for around $9. Anyone know of a cheaper place for
these? It's an NTE180 equivalent. Is there something else I can use in
place of it?

Just about any high current Darlington NPN in a T03 should work... Bob
carries the NPN Darlington that WMS power supplies use for +5V, so try that.

Can I assume that a 2N5884 would work as well? btw, what makes the 2N5883
a "better" replacement? The price?

Having a lower price never hurts.
But -- the 2N5879's were rated 15 amps, 60 volts.
The 2N5883's are rated 25 amps, 60 volts.
And, yes, the 2N5884 should work as well -- he's rated at 25 amps, 80 volts.
Heaven forbid you should ever really need these current ratings in a game,
though.
