I want to buy a ZVG-Zektor Vector Generator Board kit from

http://www.zektor.com/zvg/

I'm trying to build a VectorMAME system and I need this part. Anyone
have one cheaper than the website?

Also, looking for information from people who have already built a
VectorMAME unit. Thanks.

Thanks Hamish. I am also working to put one into a SD cab! How are
your controls set up? I spoke with Matt about his project and it
sounds awesome. I'm going to use the SD CP, add 2 8 ways, one each in
between the right turn and and thrust buttons as well as a spinner
(from SlikStik) in the center. I wish I could fit a ball in there, but
I don't think there is room. How has your luck been getting VectorMAME
to work? I've heard from anohter guy named Nate that the setup is not
that ideal and getting DOS to do the sound is horrible. I'm going to
use a laptop, a 366mhz to try first. I've heard this is not good
enough, but I don't understand why. MAME can run in DOS on a 266mhz!
Anyway, do you have a website or anything? Mine is www.mooshack.com
check out the arcade pic section. Once I finish, I'll post pictures
and whatnot on there. I've emailed the ZVG people, but haven't gotten
a response. Are you sure they are sold out? Their site is still
taking orders. What about this batch in the summer? Do you think it
will have any added benifits? What about new software so it works in
Windows? That would be the best thing in my mind. Let me know, Mo

I doubt you will find one cheaper and you may be out of luck buying one
directly from Zektor. I believe they are sold out but will be making
another small batch this summer. I'm in the process of building mine in an
SD cabinet. Cant wait to see the end result.

sounds like you are attempting the exact same setup as mine. I would also
like to squeeze a trackball in there for Quantum. I don't anticipate having
a problem getting MAME working properly in DOS as I have done it before many
yrs ago and have worked in DOS for a long time. I'm pretty sure you will
need a more powerful machine than the 366 MHz laptop. I am going to be
using an old Compaq DeskPro EN slim form factor pc. The machine is solidly
build and has a 650 MHz processor, 256 mb ram, etc... It also has a
build-in soundcard which should work with the standard Sound Blaster DOS
driver. If I have problems, I will install an old ISA 16bit Sound Blaster
card and be done with it.

So far I have collected the following parts...

Space Duel complete with working WG6100 (may switch out with an Ampliphone)
1 x ZVG Board & cable
1 x I-PAC 4 & 1 x Opti-PAC from Ultimarc
Vortex spinner from Oscar
2 x NOS Wico joystick off eBay.
Tempest knob I bought from Bob Roberts about a yr ago

I spoke with Zonn from Zektor earlier this week. He told me that I
purchased the last board but did say they are going to make about 50 more
this summer. He also mentioned that he was going to develop a Windows
driver but didn't mention any changes to the hardware.

I know there many folks out there who have successfully done this before and
many other who wish to take on a vector MAME project. Perhaps you want to
dedicate a section of your website to swapping stories and experiences?

I will keep you posted on my progress, please do the same.

Thx.

Zonn here, (I do lurk RGVAC pretty much daily),

Just to clarify two points here, we are currently out of ZVGs, however we're in
the process of have more made as I type.

It's the Window's driver I want to attack this summer, which should be a bit of
an undertaking since I don't even write standard Windows software. I have
written quite a few device drivers for other operating systems however, and no,
it won't require any changes to the hardware. It shouldn't even affect the
firmware in the ZVG, but even if it did, I designed the ZVG's firmware to be
user upgradable. With something as complicated as a vector generator, I wanted
to be able to send out any patches that might come up, without having everything
shipped back to me!

I spent months testing the ZVG before it shipped, and so far it's paid off! The
firmware shipped in the ZVG is still the original version and I have yet to find
a bug! And it's some pretty dang complex code! Very cool! 🙂
