i am playing ut2k4 demo and i get a message saying my cd key is already in
use....etc, etc. and i am blocked from playing!

hello? ut2k4 ppl? i'm playing the DEMO!!! whats with that?

anyone know anything about this?

I'm just guessing here, but it could have something to do with the
server version. Some servers have a 'minimum patch level' and maybe
the demo doesn't qualify?

I had this with the retail game a few times.

Reply I got from Atari support;

"This error messages usually occurs when a server has gone down and your
client tries to reconnect too quickly. The Master server believes you
are
already playing, and when trying to reconnect, it thinks more than one
person is trying to use the CDKEY when in fact it's just you. Waiting a
few
minutes and retrying usually corrects the issue."

Probably doesn't help you much but obviously some glitch can cause you
to get this message in error :)
