Hello,
having problem with lights going off on printer - error messages says remove and check cartridges...have done that several times and lights remain on

Did this happen after you replaced something? Get new cartridges, refils, aftermarket cartridges? How old is the printer? You could have a hardware issue with the print heads or the assembly that moves them.
