Hi,

I need some help installing X-COM Terror from the deep. Last time i tried
(1 yr ago), install went okay but saved games failed to open. I was
wondering whether someone here knows how to solve this??
I'd like a link a to a download location for a working version and patches.
I've tried googling the last time, but none of the fixes seemed to work.
So please tell me what to get, and where to get it to get TFTD running
onder XP Pro...

Thanks in advance,

Geek.

It'll work with DOSBox. This thread may help you:

There's a link there to download TFTD, as well.

Just in case there is anybody out there who doesn't know.

The creators of x-com have a game called Laser Squad:Nemises that is a
multiplayer version of X-com.
They are working on single player campaigns.

Run it in one of the "DOS box" emulations. I downloaded the latest
version of this one:

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1

last night to play TFTD. Works well, the speed is adjustable, and so
far it hasn't been crashing the way the "gold edition" TFTD was under
Win2K. (I'm told that, whenever somebody falls a short distance -- you
or aliens -- there's a chance of it crashing.)

This game is in dire need of a soul.

I downloaded and played the demo version. Without the long-term resource
management and soldier improvement, it's hard to think of it as an
"x-com" game. Generic pieces moving about the board in generic ways.

I do think they struck a good balance between features and clutter.
They dropped some fairly major UI choices (climbing on roofs, crouching
and lying prone), but brought in some good stuff (armor thickness vs.
weapon power, delay before firing). I wish the units were a little more
intelligent, e.g. "if you're being shot at and for some reason can't
respond, don't stand there like an idiot", though I suppose with the low
shot speed that might make it hard to kill anything.

The comparison to Combat Mission is inevitable because of the "we go"
control system. However, it's also necessary because the generic units
in Combat Mission actually have more personality than those in Nemesis.
The "campaigns" in Laser Squad are just clusters of thematically similar
single-player missions.

I haven't tried multi-player. Perhaps that's the saving grace?
