It's called competition.

That's why everyone from computers, to cars "copies" ideas and makes a new product.

BTW,
Asus 7800GT Dual has dual GPUs on single board before the 7950GX2...

its only for fools to buy anyway
who would buy this when you can get a 8800GTS for around the same price as this will likely be

only upside to this, is that ATi can offer a competitor to Quad SLi.

but thats pretty much useless in its own right, when we have yet to see a normal two card setup being overworked, let alone a CPU that won't bottleneck it.

They have it; two X1950XTXs are generally faster than two 7950GX2s, and they aren't even worth mentioning now. If you mean Quad 8800GTXs, you'd need your own nuclear reactor to power that.

i just meant they can make a literal claim to having four GPU's in CrossFire...

i don't want to see what a Quad-CF system would be like, thats just too much... not to mention a single R580 needs 30amps to run, 4 of them, thats 120amps... nuts

30 amps?? wtf :?: :?: :!: :!: :!:

I hope thats a typo - because you can't be serious.

edit:

way to post the exact same time I did...

This does have a huge advantate over a two card system, even the 7950GTX, they both only take up 2 card slots, this frees up a lot of room that mbs seem to have less and less of. Have you taken a look at the new mbs?? 1 IDE connector, and the only usable PCI's a stuck under the PCI-E making it hard to have more than one usable (if your lucky) PCI slot for sound, modem, lan etc. Ive seen a few things i would like to add such as Physx (maybe not after i get some 8800s or r600s) or the dedicated network card a few have been raving about.

2 GPUs in 2 slots > 2 GPUs in 4 slots

no joke they recommend 450watts PSU with 30amps on the 12v rail, why i had to buy a new PSU when i got my x1900

But even then, a single 8800GTX would easily wipe the floor with two X1950Pros, seeing as it outperforms two X1950XTXs in Crossfire.

True but r600 is on its way. And when DX10 comes out 2 GPUs will still be (marginly) better. And its always better to have extra space!

Yes and this why we won't or shouldn't see this dual R570 card hit the market, not to mention they wouldn't want this product to launch the same time as R600. But at the same time this does solve the problem with CF and mastercads. But now that ATi has shown a real world dual GPU product, it helps level the playing field a little, its going to come down to product placement, drivers, and who took the right design to really make DX10 be what its meant to be.

You're nuts to think ATI will be able to pack two cores with over 700 million transistors onto the same board.

Putting them there is not the problem, cooling them is. Thats why i think that if they do come out with a dual gpu product it will be in the 8900 series or ATi's equivelent.

Even at an 80nm or smaller die shrink, two G80 cores would put out an enormous amount of heat.

This card should have a good market given all the 965 boards out there and it will most likely be priced close to two x1950pro's[$350]. Plus with physics on it's way you could run it in 1 pcie slot or 1 DX10 card and dual physic cores on a 2 pcie board. Thats if it can run that way and I hope it can. Vid/physic on one board would be nice for a sff build.
The x1950pro cores use as much power as the x1800xl, I think it's like 4-6 amps. I for one hope to see this card on the shelfs.

Something I think you and many other users keep forgetting is that a GPU does not equal a CPU. Adding more physical GPU cores doesn't do any good as there are generally single GPU core solutions that are faster.
