Do you guys think the midrange X2s (4200, 4400) are worth their listed prices right now?

How long do you estimate it will be before we start seeing lower prices on the X2 processors?

My purchase of it depends on the timeframes here, I need to know how many months before there is price reductions, or if it is wiser to simply purches it now at list price and get the benefits of it now, and the benefits would be undeniably great since I am currently using a powerleaped p4 2.8 ghz northwood (http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20040830/index.html) in my workstation.

Also how much of a performance increase would the X2 4400 be over the athlon 64 'venice' 3000? Links to some graphs that directly compares these cpus would be helpfull. :p

it would depend entirely on what applications you use. if they are multithreaded then you will see a big difference between a64 3000+ and the x2 4400. if they arent multithreaded then i really doubt you will see a huge difference. only by the dual core cpus if you need them otherwise you are wasting money. if you do a lot of gaming then just buy a single core cpu and a faster gfx card etc.
look at where the bottlenecks are in your system and spend the money on alleviating them rather than just blowing $500 on a dual core cpu u may not need :)

rcj187 is right, unless you are using applications that take advantage of the dual core, I'll go with the 3000+ venice. If you buy the socket 939 mobo you can always upgrade to a dual core later when the prices come down.

Nothing is as easy as it looks

I most definitely do use multithreaded apps, and do an enourmous amount of multitasking every day.

So how long do you guesstimate it will be before the prices come down?

hmm ok thanks, 6 months time is too long. So looks like it will be worth the cost with the benefits it would bring.

This is nothing more than a guess. I dont think that you will see a price drop or at least a significant one for a very long time. The talk is that this is the beginning of a new leg in the race for the best and fastest platform. There may not be a price reduction worth waiting on for a very long time.
