I am out of the loop on some of the new tech that is out there, can anyone help me pick which direction to go?

The most intense game in my future is Starcraft 2, but in general this PC will be used for WoW. Other than that... pretty standard email/ movie/ etc machine. I am currently using an AMD XP 2700+ with a Nvidia 5500, with fairly mild OCing. I will probably keep using XP Pro until 7 comes out of the Beta.

CPU - I have read that the X2 6400 was outperforming even the new phenoms for general gaming... and that most apps don`t utilize the 3rd and 4th core. Since I am not out for high end gaming, should I just stick with an X2... or is the superior multitasking worth the price of a phenom?

Mobo - I would like the ability to OC, so can anyone recommend a mobo with a decent BIOS.

DDR2 vs DDR3 - this deals with both of the above sections.

GPU - 9600GT or 9800GT should be more than enough it seems. any specific cards people have had goodluck with?

I am not likely to upgrade this rig once it is built, I have been using my current one for nearly 6 years without really any complaints. I am not too concerned with buying "deadend" tech... so long as it can do what I want.

if you want to go amd...

AMD 720 BE
AMD 4770 when it comes out in May
Gigabyte AM3 board(only ones which can support ddr3-1600 without mobo oc.)
4gb 2x2gb ddr3-1600 @ CL9 or below.

That build will own the 6400 with ddr2-1066 and a 9800gt and it's not an awful lot more, well maybe $100 but hey it will still be better.

Also most apps and games these days can use the extra core's, and DX10.1 which will put the 4830/4750/4770 in front of the 9800GTxx/GTS 250 series.

does this seem like a decent buy? I`d upgrade the mobo to the M3n78 Pro (if i remember it reviewed well). The ram I`d upgrade to the 1066. The video would be the last thing, probably the Gigabyte OC 9800GT. $660 seems like a fair price for that system, although I would probably save a bit doing it myself... a warranty isn`t a terrible idea.

Thanks!

i just realized that the processor in the link isn`t a black edition... which may be enough of a reason to build it myself.
