x370 amd board with 2600

so im building my wife a computer and was wondering if i'd have to update the bios with the ASUS - ROG CROSSHAIR VI HERO x370 to make it compatible with the 2600

Check your BIOS version... you can do that in windows from System Information.

You'll need BIOS version 6004 or newer for the ryzen 5 2600 to work on it.

so would that mean id need an old amd chip to do so?

Well if you have on the motherboard box a ryzen 2000 compatible sticker it should work. If not return it to the store for a BIOS update.
