I am looking at buying a new MB and I was wondering if it was worth holding out for the X38. I am not interested in DDR3 but I do like the idear of the 45nm proc next year. I will be using Nvidia GFX card although I am not to bothered about SLI.

I was looking at the Asus Strike 680i board.

Any thoughts are welcome.

Overall It would be better to wait...It should be coming out really soon. There are also lots of benefits and it also is equipped with PCIE 2.0..Which doubles the bandwidth of the 16x slot from 2.5 GB of the current PCIE 1.1 to 5.0 GB. Of course cards atm can't even utilize 2.5 GB if I'm correct...But it's a nice perk for future proofing...Can save a motherboard upgrade in the future if the next generation cards can utilize the bandwidth of PCIE 2.0.

If you want the computer to be upgradable in the longest time the X38 is worth waiting for, because of the PCI-E 2.0 slots. The advantage is that you with PCI-E 2.0 can use the current generation of graphics, but also will be ready for the next generation. The downside is that the X38 will be somewhat expensive, as it will be Intels entusiast chipset, and DDR3 ram won't be cheap either(don't know if they will make DDR2 versions).

Yes that is the thing that bothers me about the X38 is if they won't make a DDR2 alternitive. The other coments you have made about the PCI-E 2.0 is one thing that made me think about waiting.

My guess is that X38 will support Crossfire, like the chipset it has benne sent to replace(the 975), if you want SLi and PCI-E 2.0 you have to wait till november when nForce 7 bords should start arriving.

I am also in the same boat, looking at the P35 now or the X38 in a few weeks...as for the X38 not supporting DDR2...google the Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 it has DDR2 support and i assume other mobo manufacturers will follow with X38 and DDR2 support.
