X4 860K + GTX 960 or i3 6100 + GTX 950

Purely for gaming. Witcher 3, GTA V, and the sorts..

Was having a heated discussion with my bud and just wondering which combo would work better with nowadays titles and future titles.

Witcher 3: x4 860K + GTX960, this game eats GPUs but doesn't need much CPU power.

860K ~ FX4300, maybe a bit slower

GTA V: i3 6100 + GTX950, this game is brutal on CPUs, and you'll probably have a poor experience with the x4.

My vote is for the i3, since you can increase FPS when you're GPU bottlenecked by turning down some graphical settings, but you're stuck with the FPS you're getting if your CPU is the bottleneck.

i3 system for the reasons above, given those two choices. Where are you and what is your budget? We may be able to do better.

i shouldve changed this to a discussion but oh well.. btw im not building i'm just curious as I was rooting for the i3 and its upg path and my bud rooting for the quad x4 860k + better graphics... and wonder what you guys think

good point. but would there be bottleneck on either of the two?

There's always a limit somewhere or the system would run a bazillion FPS at the speed of light.

The point is that the 860K is 'forever' and will limit all CPU intensive games much more than the i3 will. The 950 will limit GPU intensive games, but it can be replaced and upgraded later.
