I have been trying to upgrade my rig for better gaming but I am on a tight budget. are the old x5670's ok for gaming?

Currently using a 920 which does fine for 95% of games, but a few i play need more power.

I am aware that 12 threads for gaming is overkill, but i plan on turning off ht and hopefully overclocking the hell out of it using a h100i.

I noticed the power consumption on the x5670 is quite less then my 920 and with a decent overclock the 920 requires a ton of juice.

For $125 is this a smart thing to do, or should i just bite the bullet and save for newer stuff?

Get a z87 CPU and MOBO, such as the 4770k, and a MSI gaming z87 mobo. These, in a combined price, were $220 at my local Fry's today, and I almost got...

Get a z87 CPU and MOBO, such as the 4770k, and a MSI gaming z87 mobo. These, in a combined price, were $220 at my local Fry's today, and I almost got 'em! The price on these will continue to drop, until months after the broadwell CPU release. Take advantage of that, and get a damn good CPU for dirt cheap. As for the x5670, I do't think that it could play modern games much better than your i7. Just live with insane OC for your 920 for a couple months.

nope, i'm still holding out, 920 still performs adequately in 95% of my games. i am still wanting to upgrade if i can do it cheap and i think this will be my best option for now.

thanks for the reply :)

I got my X5670 for $95 dude, it's absolutely worth it. Sure they are both Socket 1366 CPU's but they are not very comparable, the X5670 is substantially more powerful and absolutely worth the rather small cost.

Take a look at my rig:

I went to this rig from an i5-2500k / Z77 system and couldn't be happier.

Here are my Passmark scores at 4.2ghz, your i7 920 is also in the comparison by default which is handy.

damn. where did you find those x5670 at $95? the cheapest I found is $119

pretty damn impressive, it beats a 5820 in some tests :)
