Hello all
I have Asus rampage iv formula and local seller have some nice deals on ECC memory. I know that most X79 boards support ECC memory with Xeon, but how about i7? Will it accept it, but just with 64bit without ECC? Or it will not work at all?

And how about Reg memory? I know that Reg is hit or miss, but dont know if this isnt just big miss. 😀

Thank you all for answers

Unless you run a server with really high-value data that you cannot afford to be corrupted while processing you won't really need ECC RAM.

Plus motherboard manual on page 2-5 says "You may install 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB unbuffered and non-ECC DDR3 DIMMs into the DIMM sockets." That means no registered RAM (unbuffered) and non-ECC.

Not sure about ECC working with Xeons on this board. It has worked on some X79 boards, it might work on your board or might not.

I know I dont need ECC, even on older platform. Its just the price. He is selling 8GB Samsung (PC3-10600R-09-10-E1-P1) modules for 10 bucks for piece.

I would rather have help from somebody, who actually used X79 platforms, as I used many X79 boards with Xeons and ECC memory (Even formula can run Xeon with ECC), but I havent run i7 with ECC nor even Reg memory.

But thanks for trying to help anyway

I did try on my X79 Deluxe and a 4930K few years back and it somehow worked but had some crashes and no POST even after a BIOS update that was supposed to help with stability.

It did work with a borrowed E5-2643 with no issues for the while I checked.
