X800 a 0.11 micron chip?

The rest of the article is about power. But I don't see how this line fits in with the first bit, unless they are saying that ATI is going straight to 0.11.

Did I miss something? I don't think that's the case, isn't the X800 0.13 and the first 0.11 iu supposed to be the low end cards like the RV370?

Yep it was earlier on.

Back when ATI first announced their development of the RS300/9100IGP alot of people (including myself) felt that likely ATI would start doing the integrated graohics for intel in lieu of them developing their own chips. What it seems like is that the licencing agreement came into effect and ATI helped them out (for fear of an nV solution taking favour). The current leader of all graphics is still Intel, and this was always seen as a good deal for ATI, and that their relationship with Intel has always been a pretty good one. A little strain was introduced with ATI looking for an AMD licence, but nothing big, it was to be expected (just like nV getting their Intel licence [many people thought nV would get theirs through their relationship with IBm]).

Not surprising really.

However I'm just FLOORED if this is true that the X800series is a 0.11 part. It just doesn't make sense.

Personally I think the InQ got this one wrong (nothing new there either).

Exactly.

If true this would give the X800s much more headroom than the 600mhz, so it would make alot of sense to have them enter the market around 515/525 since it's not only a small refresh headroom, but much more.

Risky though (look at the FX5800), and that's why I don't trust the news. But if ATI did have this part ready in 0.13 format long before X-mas and they were waiting for the right time (due to no competition from nV), perhaps all this time was spent in simply moving it to 0.11.

That would be a HUGE surprise if you ask me. I doubt it, but it does make May 4th all that much more interesting.

If it were true, that'd be nice, but I have to doubt that ATi would do that as well as INQ's accuracy.

Actually now that I'm home and I"ve had time to digest this (actually EB picked up on this this morning as well, didn't notice that). It seems more like they are jumping from one conclusion to another.

1 Molex + # of chips, therefore must be a different process. When in fact it may only be a question of the difference between Low-K and regular 0.13 process.

Lars never did get back to that power consumption difference between low-k and not that I was hoping for. Perhaps that's it and the InQ is simply missing that.

However if they are correct, that's pretty big. And ATI & TSMC did mention about rapidly adopting that route quite some time ago;<A HREF="http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/display/20030929004713.html" target="_new">ATI's CEO's statements about rapid adoption of 0.11</A> and <A HREF="http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/other/display/20031101041756.html" target="_new">TSMC's report</A>

Speaking of which, I'm still wondering what WTF became of the <A HREF="http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11742" target="_new">'VIPER'</A> ? And where's <A HREF="http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/display/20030925033540.html" target="_new">LOKI(another picture of Viper but mention of LOKI</A>? I like LOKI evil brother of Thor sounds Great!
