X800 PRO to beat 6800 Ultra

From the Inquirer:
http://www.theinquirer.org/?article=15406

Of course it's the inquirer, so take it with a grain of salt.

What is more interesting is the explanation that the ORIGINAL R400 project was turned into the R500... possibly because Ati thought it was too forward-looking for it's time.

So the R420 (X800) was based heavily on the R3xx, created to fill the speed gap until the world was ready for the R500, which will have all the advanced PS 3.0 goodness.

Once again though, they mention the X800's "96-bit precision" vs the R500's "128-bit precision". I have no idea what they're talking about with "96-bit precision"... could they mean that the R420 has 24-bit shader precision like the R3xx series, instead of 32-bit like the 6800 has and the R500 will probably have?

Interesting stuff. If the R420 has the raw speed they're saying it does, Kinney could be in for a big dissapointment.

well

it very well could, as ATI cards have always been faster on a per-clock basis.

itll be intersting, and very fun, if this card does indeed outperform the 6800

Dude, if the 475/950/12 PRO can open a can of whoopass on the 6800U....imagine the 600/1200/16 XT!!! Therefore I do not believe it.

Even if the XT doesn't beat the 6800U (and the alludéd 6850/6900U), it's amazing what ATi did to turn themselves around and keep pace (somewhat at least, if R42X fails). If it does win, NVidia really does need a corporate reshuffle...a company with that much more money and that much more control over the market should not lose the market share they did (and will continue to lose). I'd give as much credit to nVidia's failure as to ATi's success.

However, only time will tell...May 5th and 31st should be exciting and/or disappointing days for gamers.

Maxtor disgraces the six letters that make Matrox.

Oh, I never said I believe it. I won't believe anything until I see it.

I will say however, that Ati has had the past year-and-some to work on AA/AF algorythms, shader optimizations, and general speed enhancements.

If the 6800 only now brings visual parity with Ati's last-gen technology, then how much better/faster/more efficient will the stuff that they've been working on the past couple years be?

I won't be surprised at all if the 12-pipe X800 PRO can at least achieve parity with the 6800 Ultra in the speed department... in which case the X800XT will probably take the speed crown for sure.

The question then becomes, what is better? Raw speed or advanced shader power? Not an easy decision like it was with the FX vs. the R3xx, when they were basically the same speed in older games and the r3xx kicked ass once DX9 stuff was used.

If it does beat the 6800U then maybe Nvidia will push up some of their future releases and make this more interesting. Until then we'll just have to watch Kinney freak out.

When do we get the first reviews again?

The canaries are singing that 12 pipelines, 475MHz/950MHz card with 96 bit precision and PS 2.0 shader only will end up faster then 16 pipelines, 400MHz /1100MHz cards with 128 bit precision and PS 3.0 shader model.

Impressive, so an inferior outdated chip can match or beat (supposedly) a more advanced chip with more than enough speed for todays and tomorrows games..
IMO, the feature disadvantage has already made ATI lose my money.

The ONLY reason I have been giving the R420 due credit is because its not set in stone that it consists of PS2.0/96bit precision and 12 pipes.
If that becomes gospel, I personally will hope the ATI becomes a cheaper and lesser alternative.
For those interested in an "alternative lifestyle" nonetheless.

Like the mantra I've been campaigning on here for some time, ATI is back in their place.
Since most here are assuming these technical rumors to be true, I can only say that ATI has already failed to live up to Nvidia.

Even WITH ATIs IQ design failures giving them some extra speed, I'd actually be impressed if they dont resort to driver IQ hacks to achieve better than the 50-100% performance improvement the NV40 brought the market.
I just dont see that happening.

I'll believe all the hype when I see it.

But hey if X800Pro does beat 6800Ultra, I'd love to see Kinney going mentally retarded more than X800Pro beating 6800Ultra!

While I'd like to think this was stated with playful intentions, I think not.

Besides, it doesnt even make sense.
Is English not your native tongue?

Do you really disagree with the bulk of it DH? I know you well enough to say you dont really.

At very least, I present a different viewpoint.. a stark contrast to the rest of this thread. What I typed is exactly what came to mind when I read the article.
Might be a bit cockoo, never denied that

I'm waiting for the review. You know me well enough to expect my answer, in all it's mighty glory, then.

Whichever card is better I'm buying.

dhlucke, do you think PCI Express will give a significant boost in performance on these video cards?

as Kinney wrote "ATI is back in their place."
Man i [-peep-] hate you.
What in the world is ATI's place? What would you think of me if i said nvidia should be put back in their "place" playing second best to 3DFX. FOR TWO GENERATIONS, I might add. Or maybe I should say nVidia should stay sucking at making cards as they have been for TWO years. AND YOU SAY its a probable chance that ATI will cheat? WHO has done that in the past?
THEN you say
"Even WITH ATIs IQ design failures giving them some extra speed, I'd actually be impressed if they dont resort to driver IQ hacks to achieve better than the 50-100% performance improvement the NV40 brought the market."

WAIT A [-peep-] MINUTE... you are accusing ATI of inferior IQ quality? WTF man EVERY person knows ATI has WAY better IQ.

you know nothing about the cards coming out in the next few weeks, i dont know how you can comment on them like that

how do you know the R420 has the same shader capabilities sa the R350? PS2.0 means nothing about how fast its going to be. look at the NV35 vs the R300. both supported PS2.0, while one was easily twice as fast in that

how do you know the R420 has the same AA engine? same algorithm for AF? those are just one part of the chip, and if youve ever looked at a die schematic the AA section isnt that large. theyve increased the pipelines from 8 to 12, and 16. thats a major change. where does it say that other things arent changed as well

not saying its going ot be faster, WE DONT KNOW. so stop yapping like you know the capabilities of these chips

The R300 and R400 being 96 precision is the same as it being 24 because the 24 is the max floating point precision for each Red, Green, Blue, and Alpha. 24,24,24,24=96. Where as the NV30 and 40 are 32,32,32,32=128 floating point precision.

I agree.. ATI has improved majorly over the last year. But when a company like Nvidia was trailing behind it's only natural to see something god like come from them. I'm sure ATI will counter with something impressive.. just not right away.
