My PC is an HP Pavilion a1410n with the CPU above. It is shutting down frequently and rebooting on it's own. I've checked disks. I tried to repair anything wrong with Windows XP. Still shuts down. The only thing I thought strange was in the bios page the temperature of the CPU is 57 degrees. Is that too hot? Does anybody know what temperature the manufacturer recommends as a maximum for this chip?
Or do you have any other suggestions why this thing is happening?

Hey Tea,
Thanks for the advice. The cost is not prohibitive so replacement may be a quick, cheap fix.
Don't think the fan is knackered (love those English terms!). At 57 degrees it's spinning at 1847RPM. The system fan at 1347RPM. But obviously the 1847 RPM isn't keeping the CPU cool enough. And I don't know what it should be spinning at to lower the temp.
I did do the cleaning with an aerosol spray can but is difficult to get at it efficiently. If I do have to take it out to clean it I might as well replace it for the cheap prices on the 2 links you included. Thanks for those.
I can't find anywhere what the temperature range should be for this CPU. Do you know?
Thanks again,
Stephen

Ordered a Masscool 5T568S1H3 CPU Cooler. Arrived today and installed with new grease evenly spread across the CPU. Powered it up and been watching the temp in the bios screen all afternoon. Immediately climbed to 56 degrees and has stayed there with nothing been done on the PC. I would imagine once I start working on it the temp will go up and I'll have the same sudden reboots.
The side of the case has been off for some time. Even before these reboots started happening. So there's not a lot of heat build up inside.
I bought the Masscool model because it can go up to 4200RPM. It has been running at about 2200 RPM all afternoon. I would love to get it going faster but I don't seem to have an option to control the speed anywhere.
Next step power supply I guess. I was looking at 400w to 500w so I'll see who has a deal on. This PC will never have a graphics card. It's my backup PC.
Any other reasons aside from the CPU Cooler and the power supply you can think of that's causing these reboots?
BTW The old grease/thermal paste was still moist/wet but certainly not spread very evenly!
