Greetings,

I am looking at starting a new line of desktop builds. The build date is within two weeks. The budget is 1850 dollars, it needs to last at least five years.

Should I opt for a 4790k and get a 970, or should I get a 5820k and get an r9 280. I need it to do photo and video encoding, and it needs to include a nice mechanical keyboard, monitor, mouse, windows, and microsoft word 2014. (The client is a book writer.)

Thanks,
Godbless

I would opt for the 5820k and the 280 as the CPU and RAM is far more important than the GPU in those tasks. However, the other option is not bad and offer cheaper ram. If you can afford DDR4 RAM on the faster side along with the 5820k, go for that.

Whichever one you choose, make sure to get an aftermarket CPU cooler for either of them. Video encoding can really warm up those CPU's.

Thanks, funnily enough I had initially written x79, that I believe was actually a socket at one point. Hence my confusion.

Alright, yeah I can pick up 4X4GB DDR4 with heatsinks from crucial for 199.99 on amazon. Only fifty more than the ddr3 counter part.

Can I get verification that I will see better performance from the CPU than I would the GPU?

Just google it if you want the details. But yeah, strong GPU's are not important in those tasks.
