So I've been planniung on upgrading for awhile now, waiting on a bonus that's been a lil late XD

Prob put this build together about a year ago.

Now, I just heard about the x99 chipset.

Problem is I need a new motherboard ASAP (it's dying on me due to having a crappy tier 5 psu in it for @ 3 years-upgraded to an evga g2 750w), and that would mean rather than buying the new motherboard and cpu and upgrading slowly, I would have to buy an older motherboard just for @ 6 months tops, prob closer to 3.

Here's my original setup

Also, I have 2 memory modules selected because one's cas 10 2133 and one's cas 12 2400-wondering which would be better.

For primarily 4k gaming, some streaming/recording (not much) would the x99 chipset be worth it?

Solution
The two CPUs would perform very similarly, I doubt you'd notice the slight drop in performance of the Xeon from the i7. With that said, it would still technically lower performance at a very high price, so why bother? X99 only makes sense if you want more cores since the i7-5820K is priced so well for that and even then, it shines best with overclocking if you want to play games on it.

Basically, don't bother with a platform upgrade. Just get a new motherboard if you are sure your current board is dying. In case you're wondering, upgrading to Skylake is similarly pointless right now with only small gains from Haswell despite the large price increase. Besides that, Skylake is a little bit less stable than Haswell.

You're better off...
You are basically going for X99 just for the quad channel, the xeon will perform worse compared to the i7 in gaming and streaming and recording. Quad channel, you will never feel it. That's $200 down the drain, do yourself a favour and fck the 2nd build. Also on first build, please go for 2x8gb. And skip the 840 evo, go for 850 evo, and 500gb is an overkill, even 250gb is more than youd need, just get 250gb evo 850.

Solution
Thanks, that answers my questions. As far as 840vs 850, the difference in price vs the difference in performance makes for a much better deal. Also, I plan on running most games off the ssd, so I want a 500gb ssd.
