Hi all,

Firstly here's the system specs.

i7 5820k
Asus x99 Deluxe
16gb Corsair LPX 2800 (@2133)
2x AMD R9 290's
corsair RM850 psu
Samsung 850 pro 250gb
Running windows 7 Ultimate

Alright so here's the issues 🙁

Sometime after loading up into windows if I opened up a browser straight away the pc would black screen and restart, If I waited aroud half a minute and then starting running programs etc it wouldn't restart. I updated the bios to version 2001 and that seemed to stop it.
I assumed everything was fine after that so I decided to overclock. I couldn't seem to get the memory a tad above the 2133 without issues so I gave up with that. The 5820k though I managed to get to 4.4ghz with a cache ratio of 4.0ghz with a vcore of 1.23v, this would pass many hours of Intel XTU, AIDA64, OCCT Asus RealBench and I was pretty damn happy with that. Not so good though, I could play GTA V for hours but when I'm browsing the web the system would randomly black screen and restart giving me a lovely overclock failed error. I've now also noticed black screen restart issue creeping back happening when loading in to windows, if I have an overclock applied, upon reaching the bios screen I'll get the "overclock failed" but when I have everything at default in the bios it'll still freeze but with no OC failed error. I'm kinda stuck here, this has already happened today whilst getting on to this forum and I don't know what to do next. Can I get some advise please?

I have updated the bios to 2101 and still have these issues.
I've ran the system at stock settings for the past 4 days yet the freezing and restarting persists.

With two R9 290 cards in your system I would hope it was at least 850W.
With a very high amp rating on the 12v power rail, or rails of the cpu.

You did not state how old the system build was also.
But I can tell you that the first thing to look at is the power supply because most of the symptoms as you describe them relate to the PSU.

If the Psu is of a good brand, as I would expect it to be with the hardware you have in your system.
Then it may lead, and this is a rough guess to the age of the power supply unit if it has been used for some time.
And was moved over to your current system build.

The simple test would be to remove one of your 290 card in the crossfire configuration and test the system for a period of time to see if the same problem happens when using the system.

It would give you an indication that the power supply is, if old starting to degrade in the amount of fixed power and voltages along with amps it can produce.

The other possible cause would be to do with the memory.
In relation to it not having enough voltage supplied to it, to keep it stable even at stock clock speeds.
So if the motherboard you have permits voltage tweaks for the memory modules.

While one of your R9 290 cards is removed from the system and if it still crashes, try upping the memory voltage in the system by about a 0.250Mv power increment, and see if it stabilizes your system.

As the system exhibiting what you say it does freezing and restarting is and can be down to a lack of voltage to your memory modules.

The last of course is how hot your cpu may be getting, but also if you have a thermal trigger in the bios that you can set.
It would cause in some way for the system to freeze, thought it should either shutdown or reset the system if the case.

Hello Shaun o, thanks for the reply.

I did post what power supply I have but it's a Corsair RM 850 which I've had since July 2014.

The Ram, Cpu and motherboard were purchased mid October last year.
SSD is only a year old and the 290s are only slightly older than that.

So, I removed one of the 290's and raised the Dram voltage but a while of youtubing brought this up after another black screen restart.

Kinda strange to see this being that nothing is overclocked :/

Probably wouldn't hurt to mention that a while ago i powered on the system and got a screen like the one above telling me that my cpu was overvolted, when I checked the bios it was at 1.8 or something, I immediately dropped this down but I have no idea what caused it. Could this all be a cpu issue?

Thanks for the reply! I'll give that a go.
Everything is at default settings in the bios, I'll run Aida for a few hours but I wont use Prime.

I've ran Realbench for over an hour and also OCCT on linpack mode.
it's weird, I can play GTA 5 for many hours without a single issue but when the system is near idle and I'm on youtube or something it'll just crash and restart. I do not get any bluescreen error.

Shaun o, I replaced the power supply yesterday with a Corsair HX1000i and first thing this morning when I turn the system on it crashed after I clicked on Chrome. I'd say we can rule out the PSU being an issue here.

Thank you for your reply, JimF.

I ran memtest for just over 10 hours, all seems well.

I also seem to have no issues when running Furmark.

The system has been fine for the past few days, the issue seems to just randomly pop up.

Intermittent problems are always the hardest to trouble shoot. You have to be able to identify where exactly the problem is and fix it. You do this by tress testing each part of your system until you are able to repeat the problem and then you know where it is. It looks like you have done this.

Maybe there are some other testing tools out there that I have missed. If so see if there are other testing tools you can run.

As for other possibilities it could be your motherboard but usually Prime 95 or ATA64 catches this.

Could it be the motherboard though?

As I said earlier the crashing occurs after turning on or after idling for a while and it hasn't happened since I started this thread. If it was the motherboard wouldn't this be a constant occurrence?

So, it happened last night and twice today already. the screen just goes black and the cpu led on the motherboard lights up.
I've checked the event viewer and there's no indications of anything there, there's also no crash dumps that I can see.

I eh... am beyond lost here :/

Since starting this thread the PSU was replaced with a HX1000i.

EDIT: I had something pop up about a video hardware error.
I've uninstalled all AMD drivers and removed the 290's, putting in my old HD6850.

If it was a video problem then it should have shown up when running Furmark. It could be a driver issue. Try downloading the latest CCC from AMD. If you have another computer try putting your 290(s) in it to isolate the problem to being that card(s).
