I searched the site before posting and can't find a post that has this issue resolved.

I have an Asrock X99 Extreme 4 that has been in service for over 9 months without an issue. It is paired with an Intel 5820K and Crucial Ballisitcx BLS2K8G4D240FSA (2x8 GB). Graphics is handled by EVGA GeForce GTX 960 SuperSC ACX 2.0+ . All of these are powered by a Seasonic SS 520GB PFC F3.

BIOS is v1.5

While I was watching a saved DVD video from my local hard disk, the system just powered off - no BSOD, no thermal warnings. It just died.

My subsequent attempts to power on the PC failed. Each time I pressed the power button, the fans would spin for a few seconds and then power down.

In the process of troubleshooting, I took everything apart. When I breadboard-ed the system (CPU+Cooler+Mobo), I got 3 long beeps, indicating missing RAM. When I added a single RAM in Slot A1, it then gave me 10 short beeps (this is before POST, and means missing/undetected VGA - pulled my hair our assuming that this was CMOS read/write error ). After adding the graphics card and hooking it up to a monitor, I was able to see the boot screen (I cleared the CMOS in between as well). I went into BIOS, browsed around for about 10 -15 minutes and boom.. it powered off again.

Everything was idle for about 2 hours while I cleaned the whole thing, so that idle period seems to have bought me about 15 minutes of power up time. I am at a loss to see what else would go wrong. I breadboarded on a non-conductive surface. The only component left to detach is the CPU & Cooler. Currently trying the CMOS battery reset method (power off, wait until residual charge goes off, switch reset jumper, pull out CMOS battery, wait 4 hrs)

Any suggestions / guidance you can give is much appreciated.

I bounced this off the Asrock forum and got a suggestion to try with another PSU. Definitely on my to-do list tomorrow.

Regards, J.

Years ago, I had a VERY similar issue happen. I tried everything from rolling back gpu drivers, clearing cmos, defaulting BIOS, trying new ram. The last thing I had done when it crashed was allowed the graphics drivers to update. But it allowed me to game for some time before the crash happened.

Nothing I tried was working, it would just boot and die. I actually chose that crash month, to build an updated system and put the dead rig in the closet. I plugged that same old broken rig in spring '14 as I was cleaning house... and it posted first boot.

I just sat there and felt like I was in the Matrix. Maybe dirty power is the only thing I can think of; as I'm not very knowledgable about troubleshooting advanced problems??? Sorry, I know this is no solution, just thought I'd share.

Yeah, I'm inclined towards the PSU as well. Looking to buy a Corsair RMx Series RM750X as replacement/ test unit. Which means that I have to wait a couple of days for Amazon to deliver it to me.
