X99 or Z170 for my needs...

Hi guys

So I know quite some bit now after a couple of weeks reading up on X99 vs Z170 boards. However, I'm still stuck between the 2 and I'd like to ask you guys.

Me: I'm an IT specialist, been building computers since I was a kid. Including overclocking, watercooling etc. I wouldn't say I'm an addict at it, but I find it fun to push a little. My Striker II Extreme has done well for 8 years or so but now finally given up (PCI lanes wont start the graphics cards). So now I'm looking for a new build.

Needs: Photoshop, Lightroom (Canon 5D Mark III professional photo development, this is the most important for me), at least one fast (256/512GB) nvme SSD drive for short-term photo processing storage (probably via M.2 so keep PCIe free), sometimes gaming (less in recent years, but still).

Wants: Something future-proof and upgradable that's fast enough for SLI cards (2) plus a few SATA and at least one nvme SSD in the M.2 running maximum speed....without bottlenecks that will frustrate my build. No crazy prices or silly nitro cooling etc.

Dilemma: I like the look of the Z170 and 6th Gen Intel. The boards will be upgradable if the processor becomes insufficient in future years. The bus speeds are faster. But the X99 is more available and developed. If anything I'd want the Asus Maximum Extreme VIII, just announced but not release date known and I need to build asap. The X99 processors are also ridiculously priced, for what is essentially yesterday's technology.

So do I wait for a Z170 board that I want (Asus Extreme) and a processor that's cheaper (6700k), or build now using an X99 system (with ridiculously expensive processor)?

Any advice or opinions much appreciated!

Thanks
Matt
