I have a 5930k/asus Sabertooth x99 and was wondering if I could use a Samsung 970 evo nvme m.2 ssd for the os drive? The system is dated but works well and I just want to update it a little. I used to run 980ti sli but with dx12, I removed one of the cards, so I was going to install a nvme drive. Would there be any issues due to the system being older or would it just be plug in and clone os?

Solution
Both the current drives are 850 pros. Will the 970 m.2 drive have any heat issues, I need to worry about? I did a little research and they get hot. It is just for the os. I won't be playing any games off of it. No editing or anything. The reason I chose the 970 evo was because of pcie3.0. Would the 980 pro be a better choice or would thete be issues because of pcie 4.0?
In a PCIe 3.0 port, the 980 would be a total waste of money. The 980 would be limited to the same 'speed' as a 970.

Just for the OS? You'll not see a huge difference over your existing 850.

We see a huge difference moving from HDD to SSD.
Between varying types of SSD? Not so much. Especially for your stated use case.
I have a 256gb Samsung pro ssd for the os and a 1tb Samsung pro ssd for games. It is a custom loop pc I use to play games on and that is it. The nvme is supposed to be alot faster. The x99 Sabertooth has a m2.0 slot.

Yes you can use the 970.
Don't expect a big bump over a sata ssd for normal usage.
