Hi, I'm a first time builder researching for a full build. I'm aiming somewhere between $1400-1700. I'm a bit conflicted on motherboard and cpu of choice, I've done quite a bit of forum surfing on the subject but I find the threads are typically 4-8 months old so I'm trying to get a fresh perspective with new information. The basic gist, I'm an avid: gamer, game developer, programmer, and I use software like Creation Kit, Unity, etc... I also game with a 4k monitor and will likely experiment with VR over the next couple years.

What cpu/mb combo best fits my needs with a single gtx 980 ti? I might OC but probably not extensively.

Approximate Purchase Date: e.g.: This week/next week

Budget Range: 1400-1700 Before/After shipping

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Programming/GameDev>Gaming>Editing:Models,textures,audio>web surfing

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: Full Build

Do you need to buy OS: Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Any

Additional Comments: Will likely experiment with VR/ Streaming

Why Are You Upgrading?: My current "rig" is a Dell xps 15 with a gtx 540M and I need more power for gaming/ software development.

I haven't bought any parts yet, want to review before making purchases.

If you have any advice in terms of value/performance, or parts that are virtually the same but cheaper let me know and if any further information is needed to direct the decision feel free to ask.

Solution

Solution
I'd go with the X99 rig although I'd recommend putting in some more money for an SSD (even a 240GB one) and a better CPU cooler (the 5820k has a TDP of 140W so yeah). Also recommend switching HDD to WD Blue (the 7200RPM one) and getting a tube of Prolimatech PK-3 for the thermal paste. The paste included with coolers is most of the time utter junk. X99 will offer much better performance.
