So I will begin purchasing the components needed for this rig around May-June of this year and will complete the build in 2nd week of August.(Dont ask why I have schedule like this, long story) Anyways, a link to my build on PCPartPicker will be provided at the end of this.
Currently I have a new 4790K CPU with a GTX 970 FTW GPU sitting on my MSI Z97 MPower Max AC mobo. I am very happy with the results of this PC but want a larger case ("showcase") that allows me to cleanly supply all of the custom 2-loop cooling that I would like to do with it. This current setup will become my wife's work PC as it has 32GB RAM at 1600MHz and good RAID setups with a SSD for OS.
Anyways, straight to the point of this convo.. With the Caselabs STH10 massive size, I will have the space to perform a show of my components. I must decide on whether to go the more expensive route of the ASUS X99 Deluxe (or Asus Rampage V Extreme) or keep the Z97 chipset and get an MSI Z97 XPower Max AC. The real problem I am encountering is PCI-e lanes. I will only be running the gaming rig at dual GPU in SLI with 2 27" monitors; also, I will not be adding any more expansion cards neither big or small(x1, x4, x8 size) to this final rig. I have an External NAS setup in my tandem garage that I stream movies, music, and keep backups of my PCs on.
QUESTION: In terms of future proofing and overall needs, should I go ahead with the X99 mobo since it is newly release or continue with the reduced PCI-e lanes of another Z97 chipset mobo? And if I do go with X99, should I go with the Rampage V Extreme or the Deluxe? Since I am not and will not be spending the money on any future GPUs, I want to make this rig the most it can be for this final build. (P.S. I tend to like the latest and greatest gear so this is a tough decision for me to make. I dont want to spend the money if I shouldn't, but I will if it means making the most of this. I need this to be the right call, not a "how cool would it be if I had xxxxx setup!")

You don't really need WD Black drives if they're just for Storage - WD Greens will last longer and turn themselves off when not needed (which is pretty much all the time unless your transferring files)

SP Fans will be much quieter than the AF Fans - granted they run slower so cfm is lower, but if you have 8 of them then it wont be an issue :) Have you considered using 200mm static fans instead? lower RPM, higher volume of airflow than any 120mm or 140mm fans.

If your GFX Cooling is included in the Custom Cooling Loop as well, you will only need 2 or 3 additional fans - not 8 - but I also understand you're likely going for a look and it's likely an aesthetic choice :)

You've gone top end on everything else, why not 32GB of RAM?

If you're just going for dual SLI, get the Z97 chipset. The X99 comes in handy when going for tri or quad setups, and you're not really going to get any benefit from DDR4.

Dual SLI is where it's at. Tri-SLI doesn't have as big of a gain as when you go from 1 to 2, and especially when you're talking about the GTX 970 in SLI with 2, 1080p 60Hz monitors, you'll be good to go for a long time.

Have you thought about 1440p or 144Hz monitors?

How far into the future do you want to future proof? I'm personally going with x99 since I know in a year or three I'm probably just going to be too tempted and go up to triple SLI, also I think future games etc. will be able to take advantage of the extra cores better, even today I like to do a lot of multitasking though my Sandy Bridge still does pretty good (and would be kept except one of my x16 slots cracked and SLI went away).
You might not be planning on it now but in a couple of years maybe you'll get tempted by 4K (I love it) or heck even 8K and wish maybe you'd gone with the x99. If you were the type to build a new system every two years than it would be easier just plan for now, but if you want this to last three, four, five years I personally would (and will) go with x99.
