Given that in the American market the bulk of HDTV capable sets are CRT
based, any as such generally capable of 480p and 1080i, will the Xbox 2
handle conversion of 720p to 1080i?

Really? It seems that the flat screens and lcd projection tv's are
dominating the stores with few CRT based tv's available.

flat screens and dlp/lcd/lcos rptvs are dominating floor space _now_ because
the technology has matured enough to bring the price down to about double a
good crt.

in regards to 360, I'm near positive it will internally scale to whatever
standard resolution you want.

Think in terms of installed base.

No official confirmation yet, but I recently read an interview with an
xobox official and when asked that exact question, he said that they
wouldn't leave any of their market behind.

So you can probbaly bet that it will.

I sure hope so given that 720p is not very widely supported outside if
plasma/LCD HDTV sets.

I don't get the question? Are you saying TVs only support 480p and 1080i
and don't support 720p?

I am. I don't know the numbers, but it would seem that with stores pushing
non CRT, I would bet that most HDTV's sold are not CRT.

I looked at the CRT versions before deciding on a RP LCD. The CRT's are
limited in size and they're so damn bulky.

I would agree with that. Especially during the onset of HDTV, I saw
nothing but RPTVs.

I have an older 36" Sony Wega CRT and it doesn't support 720p. No
upscaling to 1080i or down sampling to 480p, it just flat out doesn't
work.

From my understanding, many older HDTV's are like that. Not sure if
that was because of a technical limitation, or maybe the TV
manufacturers never thought 720p would become a common resolution.

If the Xbox2 has a video scaling solution built-in then it won't be a
problem.

Archived from groups: alt.games.video.xbox (More info?)

If there is no scaling, there will be options for those that do not support
720p. Like the current Xbox, there will probably be a dashboard where you
can select what your set supports. The game will just pick the best your
set can do that the game supports.

Sorry, but I can believe that. Regardless of the quality of CRTs, the
"mainstream" consumer will trade that in an instant for convienence or
ergonomics. LCDs will dominate as they become increasingly cheaper, or
RPTVs for cheaper price and bigger size. The only thing that will
replace their future dominance will be future thin technologies (i.e.
OLED). Or even CRT but only if it becomes smaller, which if I remember
correctly, there is a new technology in the works, offsetting CRT
right?

Keep in mind I'm not saying better, I'm saying easier. That's what most
people care about.

Plasma and LCD based televisions only recently became affordable to the
masses. Trust me, most of the HDTV's in the USA will be CRT based models.

Gee, what store do you know that will accept my old CRT RPTV (480p/1080i)
"in trade" on a new whatever tech 720p model? Any?

I'm going to take a bath on my current HDTV and shell out further $$$ just
to support 720p Ebox games? Riiight.

The installed base of HDTV's is predominantly CRT and not 720p native.

Over time that might change. Over time, everything changes. But for
now.............

I don't know about that. Maybe I've been out of the loop for awhile but
when I first started looking for HDTV, they were mostly all RPTVs and
now it seems to be mostly all LCDs and Plasmas taking the shelf space.

BTW, what country are you in? I'm only referring to the U.S. and what
I've seen in the midwest. I have no idea what type of tv (crt, lcd,
rptv, plasma) is mainstream in other parts.

Archived from groups: alt.games.video.xbox (More info?)

I've got a CRT too. If X-Box 360 doesn't support 1080i scaling from
720p, and PS3 does, I buy PS3
