xbox 360 controller audio out bad sound quality on pc

I use a xbox 360 controller for pc games. I found a headphone in my collection with a 2.5mm jack and connected it to the controller. I am getting sound in the headphone through the controller but the quality is very poor. Is it a fault of my headphone or the audio out is not designed to be used on pc??

Can you attach the headphones to the PC, rather than the controller? That should be the best way to attach the headphones.

I cannot connect to the pc since there a is long distance b/w the pc and me.
