I just started having problems using my wireless Xbox 360 controller on my PC tonight. Anytime I am in game, the left thumbstick acts like I am pressing it down and scrolls through the menu all by itself.

I have two controllers and they both do the same thing so I don't think it's hardware related. I am using a 3rd party USB wireless receiver from Amazon and it had worked flawlessly until today, although the last time I had played any games with it was about 2 months ago.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers multiple times in the device manager but am still having the issue. I also ran the .exe from http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/d/xbox-360-wireless-controller-for-windows but it says those drivers are already installed.

Games I had issues with were Assasins Creed IV and L.A. Noire, I loaded up an SNES emulator and the controller acted fine.

The only major change I can think of from when the controller last worked until now was a BIOS update, could there be a USB setting I need to change?

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.

Thanks for the help, let me know if you need any other information.

Solution
Actually looks like a "dead-zone" issue. Have you tried recalibrating the controllers? Have you tried booting into windows with the wireless adapter disconnected and connecting it afterwards?

Thanks! I found the issue when I went to recalibrate the controller.

I have an old Microsoft sidewider joystick connected for flight sims and it was overriding the 360 controller. When I saw the icon for it in the list of game controllers I glanced over at the joystick and the stick is leaned all the way back due to the force feedback not being engaged. I disconnected the joystick and the 360 controller works fine now.
