Xbox 360 hard drive support

Hi, I have had two of the older xbox 360s and both of them got the red ring of death. I'm looking at buying one of the new 360s with an internal hard drive but its only 4gb and my external xbox hard drive is a 20gb. Would I be able to plug in the external one to it and use it like a memory card?
