I really, really hope this is wrong, but if Spong's excellent
journalism (!) is right it could mean Microsoft are on the verge of
screwing up in a big way. Course if the focus group members all give
negative feedback it'll never see the light of day (good!)

Spong's rep aside, I fear this really is going to be the name. But what's
even weirder is I don't actually 100% hate it now.

It's so, so, so stupid that MS won't just call it the Xbox 2. But let's say
they're dead set on not having a "lower number" than PS3. They obviously
wouldn't call the machine just Xenon, because it's got to have Xbox in the
name. "Xbox Xenon" doesn't mean anything... what's a Xenon? It has no
meaning to consumers. Xbox Next sounds dumb... will the next one be called
Xbox After Next? They'd have to start naming them like the Friday movies,
and people will inevitably start referring to it as NextBox, which IIRC
is/was Steve Jobs' computer.

Xbox 3 is out, because there was no Xbox 2. Xbox 2005 would be dated in a
matter of months. Xbox 360 fits the bill by a) having a "high enough"
number, one that is familiar to the eye, and one that starts with a 3 to
boot, b) is short and easy to fit in a logo, c) actually means something --
360 degrees, all encompassing, a perfect circle... d) and it rolls off the
tongue relatively easy. "Xbox Three-Sixty"

Nintendo has never been caught up in the 1, 2, 3 naming conventions, so it's
not unprecedented. Make no mistake, it's not an ideal name. But personally I
think it might grow on me. YMMV.

Oh, and those ad agency slogans mentioned in the Spong story are all awful.
"Menage a billions" might be the single worst advertising buzzphrase in
history. Is it just because they're British?

Well MS has done things like this in past. Word 2.0 was followed by
Word 6.0 considering the competition.

maybe it has a shape to justify those 360 degrees also.

I hope Sony sticks to its numbering system though, I am waiting for
that PS9 that they showed in a PS2 ad :)

Ferrari didn't have a problem calling their Modena a 360.

I think they should call the new Xbox system "Cygnus." That way Xenon/Next
Box/Xbox 360 can revert back to his original name.

Oh, and people won't know that the Xbox 2 is the same generation of gaming
machine as a PS3? How dumb do they think people really are?

I like the name. Thought I'd not sure what that does for the next gen of
X-Box. Perhaps they just keep bringing out new titles, like "X-Box Pro",
"Super X-Box", "X-Box Supreme"

I still say "Bleah" to xbox 360.

What's xbox3 going to be called then? Xbox720? Now we're begining to
sound like tricks from SSX. This might work out since there are still
rumors about Microsoft making multiple versions of Xbox2. So you could
have XBox360, XBox360 - with a twist, XBox360 with a flying squirell, etc.

Pretty dumb, actually. Since 3 > 2, PS3 must be more powerful, right?
The computer industry has trained consumers that bigger numbers mean more
powerful. Which is why Intel and AMD are now having problems trying to
sell processors because their current line of products breaks the "bigger
number in the name means more powerful product" when that isn't true
anymore.

This is also why Microsoft jumped numbers in their naming of MSWord
because Word Perfect was already at version 3 for Windows when MSWord was
on its second. So instead, they jumped to MSWord 4. 4 > 3, so MSWord is
better, right?

Sad, but true.

making the Dreamcast MicroSoft's original?

I don't think it's necessarily Microsoft's sole intent to equate their
platform with Sony's 3rd generation playstation (why not just call it a
4(xx)?), but more of a clever branding decision, and wouldn't be surprised
at all to see an xbox 380, 400, 420gt, etc. depending on its configuration.
Automobile manufacturers have been using model series to differentiate their
products for some time, chipmakers (nvidia 440, 4600, 5900, 6800/ati 8500,
9000, 9500, 9800 etc./amd fx-51, fx-53, fx-55/intel 640, 650, 660, etc) as
well, along with every other consumer electronics manufacturer known to man.

And SSX itself called SSX2 "Tricky".

They could go with Taco Bell's naming scheme. Xbox Grande. Xbox
Supreme. Xbox Grande Supreme...

Ever since Sega dropped out of hardware, no one has made original names for
their systems. What ever happened to new names like Master System, Genesis,
Saturn and Dreamcast. If those systems came out today they'd all be Master
System, Master System 2, Master System 3, Master System 4... I mean come
on. Why does the new system even have to have "Xbox" in it's name? Same
goes for Playstation. PS2 was fine but if they call the new one Playstation
3 I'm gonna puke.

Well, get your bucket ready... I'm pretty sure Sony isn't going to throw
away all the invested time and money they've used building the PS brand to
what it is today.

Now that I think about it, only Sega came up with new names for each
system - The Sega So-and-so.

You're forgetting Nintendo - NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Revolution (still
to come). It's just the (relative) newcomers to the console game that
seem to have a fixation with size... er number.

This certainly isn't new. Back in the days Atari ruled the video game world,
we had the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, and Atari 7800.

Cheers!
