My nephew has an older XBox 360 that had the 3 RROD, which I fixed 2yrs ago with a kit off eBay which worked totally fine.
He bought a game the other day, and since his XBox hasn't been updated in a LONG time, the game said it needed the firmware updated and I guess had the latest (at the time the game was made) firmware on it and it proceeded to update the system. Rebooted, said installed, shutdown, now getting the 3 RROD again.
Took the system apart, cleaned all the thermal paste off, was dry and old so, used CPU cleaner and Arctic MX2 thermal paste and reassembled the whole thing. Tested and same deal. 3 red rings flashing and nothing on the screen.
Not sure what to make of it. Assumed coincidence that it died after the update, now not sure if maybe its because of the firmware... maybe the newer firmware tells it top RROD at lower temps?
In any case... kinda annoyed. Everything has been blown clean with a can of air, and the thermal paste was replaced under both heat sinks, as well, the kit came with 4 small sinks for other chips on the board, so... any suggestions what to try? or is it simply bricked?
Found many posts for fixing the 3 RROD but all were well, buy the kit off eBay and change the thermal paste which both have been done.
