Xbox 360 slim motherboard broken capacitor

I have a xbox 360 slim with a broken capacitor under the cpu. Just like computer cpu sockets, on the back of the board there are these small smd component. But problem is that on my xbox 360 slim, it got a red ring and stopped working, it ran out of warranty and when i took it apart, i saw a missing smd component behind the cpu socket. It looks something like this

Hey there,

I would suggest taking your console down to a local repair shop so that the professionals can fit a new motherboard in for you as I would not be touching things inside the Xbox if your not a qualified electrician as it is dangerous

If the repair shops around are not able to repair the Xbox then the best option would be to get a new one

I have soldering tools and all i need is to find the missing part . I live in Philly there very very little computer repair shops around here. Best buy sucks, they charge you too much.

it will be a new motherboard. they are very tiny components, probably you cannot get them off ebay, or even if you find them there is a small chance to resolder them.
it is time for a new motherboard :/

Problem is that i cant find any parts to order, i may just have to order a broken motherboard from ebay. Do you know any legit ones?

I accidently broke one off of my board when i took off the cpu clamp :|
I had an old PCB from a xbox dvd drive where i took a capacitator that looked like the one from the motherboard. It is so microscopic that it is almost impossible to hold in place while soldering.
I took a little piece of flat wood and put a couple of layers of double side tape on it so it could sort of "dig in" the tape and be more stable but still just barely come out under the edge of the wood.
Then i placed the piece so it fitted where to capacitator should sit. Used one hand to hold the wood down and the other to solder. It got soldered in place and i did what i could to solder the other side. But was stacked up really close to other capacitators so was almost impossible to solder there with my soldering tip at least. Anyway i crossed my fingers and put it back together.. And it works now

So i guess if you find one that look like the ones allready on there it will properly work..

Im not possitive it has the same capacity or same voltage since i had no means of measure it. A Capacitance Meter would be able to do just that. But it works and it runs for now at least.

You may be able to find such a capacitator on many kind of pcb's also on old graphic cards, lan cards, motherboards or anything else that is not too old.

From what i can read you can not determine its capacity or voltage by the color. So i may just have gotten lucky with my choice of capacitators. There are many to choose from on the dvd pcb alone. Or maybe i'm not so lucky and chose one in the wrong size, so it won't last long. Don't know, only just fixed it today..

I have taken some pictures and will do my best to explain.

The materials i used.

This is the old xbox dvd drive pcb i took the cap from.

So i have removed it, i will just try to solder it back in to place as i don't feel much like taking my xbox apart again

This is the piece of wood i used.

Put some layers of masking tape on the wood. With the clean cut in the same place each time. so you get as sharp an edge as possible.

Cut off the rest of the tape around the edges.

Apply a piece of double sided tape on top of the masking tape

Also cut off the remaining tape around the edges.

So now you have the piece of wood ready and the capacitator you want to use.

Place the capacitator like this. So that the one end just barely come out on the edge.(squeeze it a little bit so it stay there)

So now when you have put the capacitator on the wood. Flip it around and place it where you need to solder the capacitator. For me i took a brake before soldering cause i was allready shaky at this point from messing with those tiny things. So better to wait until you have a steady hand again before soldering. Try to solder it (i put a tiny amount of solder on the soldering tip and then went ahead) if you soldering is good then it should be stronger than the tape and you should be able to remove the piece of wood while the capacitator remain. At that point you should be able to solder it at the other side.

Alright so i bought the dvd drive board but i have one question, how would you get the cap off? Its super small, im afraid that i might burn the entire thing

Did not get mail about your response.. Why its late. Anyway, It will stick to the solder iron when you remove it. so it is good to have board stick of wood you can glide it off the solder iron on.

But you managed to figure out i see. And very happy to hear you got it working
