Xbox 360 slim storage

I was playing dark souls when the "choose a storage device" kept popping up so I turned it off then back on and all my memory was gone I tried to make a new profile (this is xbox 360 slim btw)and it said I "needed a drive to make one" and I didnt know what that ment soooo can ya help me?
