Xbox Dashboard: Remarkably Primitive

Please do remember: if you set your Xbox to 720p mode, your Xbox
dashboard will now *not* show up unless you unhook and remove the HD
cables and replace them with regular component. You'll hear the
wonderful ambient noise of the dashboard, but you'll see nothing!

sounds more like it's your TV that's primitive...my set accepts 480i and p,
720p, and 1080i on each component in...

Is there any way of resetting the Xbox dashboard? All were disabled
(except 720p) in order for a game which is 720p capable to be played.
This TV is 1080i capable, so I assumed it could run 720. Perhaps not.
Even still, the Xbox dashboard is primitive in this respect, as the
dashboard is loaded (can hear it) but am unable to reset it back to
480p/480i -- even in regular component mode.

depends on your TV, but it sounds like you have a front or rear projection
CRT, some (most?) of which won't accept 720p signals. the xbox dashboard is
native 480i, so, if your TV's component inputs won't recognize that signal,
you'll have to switch your video cables back to composite/s-video to get
back to your dashboard and reset your video settings. it's less a
shortcoming of the xbox dashboard than of the design of your TV's inputs,
which _should_ accept/scale all standard signals (480i/p, 720p, and 1080i).

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but to toggle your dashboard
between 480i and 480p you pull both tiggers at the same time and then
click both analog sticks down (L3 and R3).

I accomplished it 'in the dark'.

There are no options for widescreen when in composite. If you set a
non-720p TV to 720p, the dashboard will remain black until you manage
to disable it despite the black screen.
