I'm trying to get new controllers for my new gaming PC. I chose to install Windows 7 Ultimate on the PC instead of Windows 10 as I have had nothing but trouble with Windows 10 and don't like Microsoft's strategy of trying to force users to use Windows 10. I know this means I can't use directX 12, but very few games use it so far anyway.
So far my research has told me this:
-Logitech controllers work on any PC platform, but don't tend to be compatible with as many games and generally aren't considered to be great controllers.
-PS4 controllers work on any PC platform via bluetooth. I am likely wanting to go this route, but they are the most expensive solution and I don't have a PS4 already.
-Xbox 360 controllers with a cord (non-wireless version) work fine and seem to be the preferred solution for PC gamers since they work without issues on all PC platforms and have a high rate of compatibility with games. Because of this, these controllers are highly sought after and fetch a high price on the used market. I can barely find any.
-Wireless Xbox 360 and wireless Xbox One controllers work on any PC platform using a wireless adapter (either from microsoft or third party). The downside here is that you need to purchase both the controller and adapter separately, which is annoying and expensive. I assume you need an adapter for each controller. From my understanding these controllers can work using the micro-USB charging cable as well, but there seems to be mixed opinions on this (perhaps it works with some models but not others?). These controllers are inexpensive on the used market (as low as $10-20 CAD for a 360 controller on Kijiji) as less PC gamers want them and the 360 is on the way out for console gamers.
-Newer Xbox One controllers with bluetooth will only work on Windows 10 with the anniversary update and various firmware and drivers from Microsoft. I assume this is an intentional move from Microsoft to further force Windows 10 on us. From what I can tell, these controllers will work on older versions of Windows with the micro-USB cable.
My dilemma is that I want to use an Xbox controller wirelessly on my Windows 7 gaming PC without using a stupid adapter. Has anyone figured out a method of doing this via bluetooth with an Xbox One bluetooth enabled controller? I'm surprised that I cannot find any threads on this. I would think people would be working on it given how useful it would be. I want to do it this way as the cost is lower than getting the adapter or going the PS4 route (particularly on the used market where Xbox controllers are much cheaper than PS4 controllers), and I won't use Windows 10. And of course I'd prefer wireless to wired, because well, who wouldn't.
I'm astonished that it is this hard to use a damn wireless controller on PC. Where are the third parties swooping in to resolve this gaping hole in good controller availability?
